The car broke down today and I am told there was lots of smoke and when I got there I could see plenty of oil on the ground. The recovery truck got it home but I had to go back to work. When I got home I noticed this.
Oil seal2.jpg

Could this have produced so much smoke and leaked so much oil. The sump oil level is well over the maximum. I have ordered some injector seals and washers and have ordered Land Rover instead of the £5 ebay ones I got last time.
Could the pressure from a leaking injector seal have caused this much trauma?
Is that camshaft seal hard to replace or does it involve removal of EGR parts?
Thanks.

Thanks for reminding me about this! One of the first repairs I made to my TD5. It is a piece of ****tachio to do. Undo the two bolts holding the loom, manoeuvre it a bit to the front, take your new seal and simply shove it in, then replace the loom. Done! Best of luck!

Just noticed yours is a slightly older TD5 than mine and also has a whatsit to do with the EGR across the front of the engine, but still should not be a big problem to make enough room to do the job.

I am fairly sure there must be diesel in the sump as the level on the dip stick is at least a couple of inches over maximum. Is the cam plate where the cam seal sits? If so what do I do withe silicone? I will have to check hose from turbo tomorrow after work. What does it mean if it is oily? I wasn't driving the car and I can't understand why the engine stopped and wouldn't start again. There are no dash warning lights on.

Perhaps something caused excessive crank pressure and blew that out, are you certain someone hasn’t overfilled it with oil?

100% certain. No-one else would dream of putting oil in an engine. I actually changed the oil a few months ago and the level incresed so I drained some out with a suction pump. I popped the camshaft oil seal back in and started it up this morning and it runs but a lot of smoke. It could be oil from yesterday but I only ran the engine for two minutes. I will have a better look after work. THanks.

smoke out of the exhaust

No unfortunately it came from around the engine area but I couldn't see where from as I had to get ready for work. The engine was only on for a few minutes so a bit surprised that it was hot enough to smoke. Thanks.
thats probably better than exhaust, will b interesting to see if its just oil spray from the cam cover

I am wondering if it is possible or likely that the rear cover might have popped off and whether when I replace the injector seals and washers, I should treat the cam cover to a new gasket. I only bought this one this year.
