Have you any experience of BP UJs? They are a third the price of GKN and I suspect that they might be GKN anyway, or maybe some other quality brand. Both have a two year warranty. Thoughts? Experiences?

The price reflects their quality. Mass produced in India with little regard for quality control you may get a good set but only by chance.
If they do fail, sending the front of your shaft into the tarmac and flipping your vehicle at 30 MPH into a bus stop full of children I am sure Chitpart will send you a replacement free of charge. After all they only cost them a pound a set.

I've replaced front and back Brit part Ujs both within 1800 mile! I've also changed my flexible coupling 4 times!
I believe it is because mine has a 2 inch lift and it puts extra strain on the components!! The Brit part Ujs, don't feel like a quality product and the circlips you get with with them aren't very springy if you close them up too tight to remove or replace they don't spring back to there original shape!
I may have just been unlucky ! But from now on I'm going to buy the more expensive part!

Oh and the 2 year waranty did not apply as mine is classed as modified and not a standard vehicle!
They didn't fail they just had slight play in them although i greased them at regular intervals

and heres a pdf that cross references part numbers - the UJs were used in lots of things, so a non automotive supplier might be cheaper if you search by alternative part number

BP are a whole saler and they also buy from OEM parts suppliers, these will be labelled "G" on the box and come at a markedly reduced price compared with LR.

They also supply price competitive parts that are of a lower grade to meet a demand for cheap parts.

If you want the best then buy genuine Land Rover, easily said and also easy to justify, my front prop had all original UJs in it at over 100,000 miles, fit new genuine ones and should be good for that much again. Friends have fitted pattern parts and replaced them numerous times from early failure.

I know what you're saying but have you compared genuine versus pattern prices recently? When you consider that genuine parts are made by companies like GKN anyway, what you are paying for is a box with 'Land Rover' on it. OEM yes but genuine parts?, not unless there is no alternative. Check out the differences on this link. Genuine UJ, £55? I don't think so...

Not strictly true, have you compared the quality and materials quality between genuine and even OEM, just because they are made by the OEM supplier they are a pattern part and use similar materials not as per LR specs.

I know a guy on LR4X4 who has tested all three, genuine, OEM and spurious pattern parts and the differences are subtle but apparent, the thickness of the needle rollers and the material the cups are forged and machined from, the cross and even the grease ports had differences.

Ultimately it's your money and you pays your money and rolls your dice.

I didn't bat an eyelid at paying £40+VAT each for genuine UJs a couple of years back when I did the fronts and I will do the same again this year when I replace the rears, why? Because quality counts and if you drive it hard like I do then I would rather fit the best in the knowledge that I've done my best to fit the best parts where they take the most abuse.

If you're running an old series 3 as a once in a blue moon trip to the tip and as a hobby to keep you out from under her indoors feet then the £3 UJ will be fine, I want to be sure that a spur of the moment trip to Scotland or a green lane trip in Wales isn't cut short because I fitted crap parts on the cheap.

These were expensive vehicles when they were new and there is no reason why they should be kept on a shoe string just because you're cheap, the better the quality the longer they last and ultimately the cheaper they are in the long run.

Same here!! As they taste the same , exactly same shape and colour too!
If the masses found out asdaz cheaper version were actually Kellogg's! ,
Kellogg's would loose revenue!!
 
What makes you think if Kellogg’s did make home brands they would be to the same speck as their own.

Just saying a factory makes parts so they must be all the same speck is nonsense.

All components are made to a price.

Actually agree, I stand corrected,
They probably sell Asda the sweepings off the floor!
 
I had the same problem and the same concerns .. in the end i opted to buy a complete propshaft from Paddocks ... and it's fine and it did come in a blue bag & i drive my S111 daily up and down the mountain in all weather and depth of snow ..
 
A bit like tyres, there are lots of 'unknown' brands that appear cheap but when you do your homework it turns out they are made (or the manuf. is owned by) some of the major tyre companies.
Another example is the genuine 'screen washer pump (purchased from the local main stealer) that never worked out of the box & was replaced by a BP unit that has been working fine for several years ;)
