I've just installed BritPart parabolics on my 109 Safari and the front springs are rubbing on the chassis on the very front mounts. Before I start squeeking to Britpart just wondering if this is a common problem with these springs or just my problem...!!!!

Thanks

Fergus

Could you take a pic of them & post it. Might help identify the problem. Dunt reckon they should be doing that & I woulda thought it could cause serious problems if you do anything to flex yer springs to the extreme.

The sound of the 'clumping' when going over bumps has decreased a lot when it's only me in the car but I'm still not happy about how the springs are sitting in relation to the chassis. Any advice most gratefully received..!!

I've uploaded some pics in the Members Gallery to help describe the problem.

Looks much the same as mine. Does appear to be less clearance above the sping, but that shouldn't make a clunk I wouldn't have thought & the clearance may be down to different makes of spring.

Can you get someone (heavy) to bounce up & down standing on the front bumper while you look unnerneath & try to see what's fouling?

I would hope it isn't yer track rods they're bashing, but it may be worth a look for any marking.

You know there's usually a difference between drivers side & passenger side springs? You have got them on the right way, right side etc? Easy to get it wrong.

Best I can do. :)

have ye got the right bolts in them?? the inside spring hanger has a threaded hole for the bolt to screw into, if some nob has just bunged any old bolt in it that is too small it will allow the spring to sit higher than it should

Thanks, for the pointers gents. I'm away for a couple of weeks now but will check when I return. The bolts were threaded into the inner holes but there were no markings for left and right springs which surprised me.

Well back in town and have had a look at the steering rod etc, dosen't look like it's been hitting them and the clunking also happens when the front axle drops.......I'll give it some time and re-torque everything up but I still don't like how the front of the springs are touching the chassis.

Thanks for the comment, I am quite surprised and if things don't improve in the next few hundred miles I will buy another set from another manufacturer.

There never going to get any better why dont you send them back you cannot go wrong with a well known make such as Rocky Mountain or Brithish Springs Chris Perfects ones are supposed to be good but I dont know what make the are.

Nick.

I have got two SWB landys one has british springs parabolics, and the other has bearmach blue ones. Neither of mine has this problem, something is wrong somewhere. Did you loose fit the springs first then drop it on to its wheels to torque them up...? It seems very strange, you need to get on to britpart. Good luck.......

I,ve got britpart on my 88" and they're fine, looking at your picture it looks as though the spring hanger is slightly bent, when you fitted them did you lower the motor prior to tightening the nuts, which is what you should, I didn't and end ended up with the car about 4" higher than it should be and as a consequence buggered the the front prop with too much of an angle which started of as a rattle and developed into a clunk, did you change the shox or keep the old standard ones, I paired my springs up with procomp es3000 ,

Cheers Nick

Parked next to a reconditioned Stationwagon yesterday that also had BritPart springs.......so after examination I can say that my 6 year old galvanised chassis has far less clearance from the front spring hanger bolt holes to the chassis than the other new galvanised chassis I just saw. So after all that it appears my chassis is just not good enough.....!!!!! hear we go again........

Thanks to all for the help lover this, much appreciated.

I have a series 3 which i have just put parabolics on, and have the same problem with the top of the suspension curl rubbing just and just on the leading edge of the bracket/chassis. Both front springs are exactly the same as are the bolts (threaded).

because it is only a small connection between the chassis and the springs it is making a god awefull squeeking sound when going over bumps.

thanks for the info on nipping the bolts tight once the vehicle has been dropped...i didnt know this.

kind regards and muddy bits

If you have a look in the back of the Haynes there are a set of excellent drawings on the set up of the springs. Probobly doesn't translate exactly for paras but it is a good start point. The advice about dropping the vehicle before tightning everything up is crucial. In fact to get the correct clearance between bumpstop and sprins I had to jack up the springs/axle slightly. I'd say it's worth loosening everything off and set it all up again.

Thanks for that Ashoofack, so i have 3 inch military spec "shackles" (you know the things the springs bolt onto) should they be tightened or as a mate has suggested they should be loose?

pardon my phrase-oligy, i am very much a noob when it comes to techinkal landy talk (but i am learning)

I'm in the process of fitting a set of grey bitpart parabolics to the front of my series 3 swb. They both have the same serial number, that is they don't appear to be side specific. I understand, standard springs are side specific to account for camber.
My front chassis dumb ends have both been replaced, by myself, so I have new front spring hangers.
My near side spring is fitted but is fouling on the cross section of the chassis front spring hanger. My solution will be to:

Get another spring from the place I bought my other from, see if it fits.

Or, take my angle grinder to the spring hanger and make it fit.

that is my next action (to grind the leading egde down by a few millimetres) trouble is i dont want to damage my lovely galv chassis.

good luck and may the force be with you.
