Hello lovely people!
Please be kind, I love my car but don't profess to know anything about her, and was hoping you knowledgeble people could help a girl out?
So I broke down yesterday after bellowing white smoke from the exhaust all down the A5.
It's been looked over by the garage (whom I tend to trust), and he said there wasn't much oil in it, in fairness I don't think I've checked since late October, guilty as charged :(. However he filled her with oil and said that when the car starts oil is coming up and out of the dipstick.

He said that in order to explore all avenues the first thing he needs to do is replace the "breather valve in the rocker chamber" he also gave it another name but my daughter was crying and I couldn't hear well, didnt feel right asking for a 5th time! Something along the lines of Depression Camber? Decompression Chamber? Can anyone tell me the name as my father would like know as he gave me the car. Also does £280 to replace this part, plus labour and the oil change sound about right? I'm just so nervous as obviously something else could be wrong after that..

I really hope this post is okay and I've not gone against any forum rules.

Thanks in advance ♡

Hi Mismae.
Keep away from that garage they are trying to pull the wool over your eyes, you need to change the PCV filter link below, it takes about 40 minutes to change including doing an oil change at the same time, 10/40 semi synthetic oil and an oil filter total cost for parts would be only about £30 I am sue your dad would be able to do this easy task of a job, at the same time maybe change the air filter £15

PCV filter

Oil Filter

Full service kit but I prefer to use 10/40 oil of the same make.

To do a full service on a TD4 should cost no more than £150 including parts & labour.

For £280 I would want the manifold changed for a clean one also the EGR valve & MAP sensor even the fuel filter.

Hopefully the car as not consumed it's own oil which I doubt as you would or could have had a runaway diesel, which still runs after turning off the ignition, sounds like its just the PCV filter blocked a good service should see the car right, but find another garage or do it your self.

Run from that garage as they're taking you for a ride. The crankcase filter is a cheap (about £30) and easy DIY job, that needs nothing more than a 5mm Allen key and about 30 minutes of time.

Thank you for your reply :) although considering it took me 10 minutes to figure out how to open the bonnet, I'm not sure 'easy DIY job' would apply to me! Haha, unfortunately I follow an awful female stereotype when it comes to cars.

I'll let my dad know what you guys have said though and hopefully get this sorted. I get such anxiety about these things :(
