Hi there, i have a series 3 88' which i have been restoring over the past year. Just replaced all the brake shoes, adjusters and snail cams but they have decided to start locking up when trying to push it back into the garage (rolls forwards fine and hubs roate freely with wheels and brake drums removed). I have tried adjusting the cams, tested different spring positions, checked the leading and trailing shoes (appear to both be the same) checked the hand brakes not locking, that its not stuck in gear or 4wd and im still stumped! Any advice would be helpfully as my mot is next week...Thanks

1) Introduce yourself
2) Don't post the same thing in 2 different sections, its annoying.

People come on here for advice and to check the progress of others peoples Land Rovers, not for a lesson in etiquette!

How rude of me, I completley forgot to introduce myself!

Sorry A Frazer not sure what it would be myself, had a similar problem with a 90's rear brakes which could be resolved by adjusting the snail cam, but you mention that you've already tried this.

You really are a douche aren't you.....

mate i had the same problem with my series 2 in the end it turned out that the pad return springs wernt up to the job, probably original. got some new ones and it still did it, turns out the guy had fitted them before us had fitted them wrong i then copied how they came off when refitting, make sure they have the right hooks in the right holes, and the spring on the right side of the pads which is the axle side.

it sounds to me like youve fitted the shoes and either fitted the springs wrong or the springs on there are duff or not for that vehicle. might also help if you file a slight chamfer into the leading shoe to prevent catching on the lip of the pad.

Going to try chamfering the leading edges tomorow as I seem to have exhausted every other option, thanks for the help.

while yer at it ( if you dont have overdrive fitted ) and remove the round dome shaped cover off the back of the gearbox higher up but next to the handbrake drum ( has 6 14mm nuts holding it on )

and check the fekkin big nut holding the little cog on that spline shaft is propper tight because if its loose it will unwind the nut against the cover you removed and lock evrything up as if the handbrake is on

to check this is a 15 min job and a lot less frustration and friggin about with the brakes

:D:D:D:D:D hope this helps :D:D:D:D

a mate had this on one drum (just the one) it turned out that it was a fraction undersize (new drums all round) and by the time he asked me to investigate the problem it was too late to return it ...

being undersize we had two choices, machine it or change it, no lathe access meant we had to change it

cheap brake shoes appear to come with quite a range of dimensional tolerances as well so if you've changed those it could be contributing to the problem
