Hi All.

I'm really confused. I had nasty wirring and scraping noise on our FreeLander when braking from any sort of speed.

Decided to replace the discs and pads with uprated EBC discs and EBC heavy duty SUV/4x4 pads.

Now the scraping noise is worse. Granted - the brakes are now fantastic, but wtf is the noise?!

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Forgot to mention - you can feel the scraping through the pedal.

New pads/discs have been on for about 150 miles so far.

Cant you road test it and listen to where it is coming from, get somebody to drive it past you and listen to both sides and then take it from there.

Could be a uj breaking up, I would imagine having done the discs that wheel bearings etc are ok and that the back plates are not rubbing.

I'd be very suprised if the rears had trouble (Drums) expecially with the FreeLander bias towards the front. That said - I don't think its the rear. You can pull the handbrake and the rears brake very smoothly.

uj?

Its got worse since I changed them!! - although I suspect its because im having to brake harder while they bed in.

scraping... feels like if you've had a brake pad wear out completely and you end up with metal on metal.

Although they're new pads on discs - its the best way to describe the sound and feeling.

No bumping or vibration then, If it were me I'd at least take the drums off and inspect the rears although I agree if the h/brake is smooth you would think all is well, but think you should eliminate the obvious first.
I wouldn't suspect a universal joint if it only happens when braking..

I've had this myself where small metal pad retention thingys twisted/corroded/broken up and rubbed on the outside of the disk. There's a part on them thats bent to fit in between the caliper body and the disk, and this had been grinding on the disc.

I started the job not knowing what it was at first, and found this to be grinding in tatters when i turned the disk. Didn't wanna put my brakes back together without it in and couldn't find the retention kit locally so i cut a similar peice out of a old cadbury roses tin, bent it to shape and it works perfectly. Obviously i had the parts ordered and have got the genuines in now lol.

Metal on metal - thats the noise. You could have hit the jackpot. I shall take the wheel off and have a looksie!
