good afternoon all.

The landy is still not on the road but the list is very short now!!

The brakes were awful when we got it. as in positively dangerous. i bled the brakes and removed lots of air and adjusted the rear drums. they are now much better.

but when braking hard the back wheels lock up earlier than expected. is this just due to weight transfer etc and normal or could there be a problem. the disks and pads seem in fair condition and there is no pull one way or the other when braking. the tyres are colway's. i feel the front brakes might not be working well enough maybe.

its on a 1986 90 with 200tdi, front disks, rear drums and servo assisted.

any help or ideas very much appreciated.

steve

check that the brake limiter, bolted to the chassis leg under the servo, hasn't jammed. Youllk have to take it out though, which will mean re bleeding them. Go for a drive and use the brakes from a good speed a few times, see if the balance hasn't righted itself, cos they mnay jus need polishing again if they have got rust on them. A drive will do this.

I've got a 2006 90CSW and if you brake hard on that the rear wheels lock up first (usually the NS) and the vehicle as a result skids to the left slightly, requiring steering correction. It's done it since new and I was told that the brakes might be "glazed" by someone on this forum. The solution was to speed up to 60mph and apply the brakes quite hard down to about 20, then repeat several times, then drive for a while to cool them off. This worked for a while and the brakes were better.
I guess it's partly weight transfer also, and a fact of 4x4 life. To be honest it's never been a problem in day to day driving.

Mine locks up the rear first if you REALLY stand on it. Thats with both disco axles under it. Never found it a problem on the roads though, even under sharp or hard braking. If you've locked up the back then the front will follow soon on mine!

cool. no probs. i can live with it. its just that its my missus car really and worry about her when she drives as she does go too fast imo and is pretty pants at pre guessing what people will do. its on the road tommorow. yay. so hopefully they will clean up nicely.

cheers for the advice. steve
