Brakes and Discs

Hi guys,

I'm picking up my Freelander this weekend.

Its coming with a full MOT but the brake discs will soon need to be replaced.

I'm assuming it's wise to to the pads as well, but would it also be worthwhile changing the brake fluid? Is it something a competant home mechanic could do?

OK... Let me put it another way...

I'm quite happy bleeding and changing the fluid on my motorbike. Not really owned a car of my own to attempt 4 wheels. Perhaps I shoudl grab my mate to gimmie a hand.

halfrauds do a handy little bleeding kit that works off your spare wheel,s pressure , tis a 1 man operation BUT as sean says you have to be compendant enough to do the job in the first place

I appreciate the serious tone. Luckily I have access to a runway I can test them on and come to a rolling stop should I cock it up!

and what happonds if you cant get them right i sopose you got to drive it on the road to a garage with dodgy brakes

Given there's a mechanic on site I think I should be OK to keep said vehicle 'off the public highway' and not kill any kittens.

Freelanders are no more difficult to bleed the brakes on than any other car !!!!
Bit disconcerning that you aren't sure if you need to change the pads when you change the discs though.

Let's face it Lew, if you have to change the disc, then you will have to change the pads that will have formed to the grooves of the old disc. Worthwhile changing the fluid too, depending on the mileage. I'm also competent enough to change pads and bleed brakes, but I will give it to my local mechanic to change the fluid. Keeps local business going and I feel safer that a qualified mechanic has worked on the brake system. Your choice though.
