Brake upgrade has turned into so much more.

Well I bought myself a set of tls 11" brakes and fitting them has turned into almost a full axle rebuild.
I took my free wheeling hubs off and decided to re-furb them while off as one was a little stiff. I found it was totally busted. So I had to repair that.
Then I found my hub seals where leaking.
Then while I had that much in bits I decided my pitted swivels could do with being replaced.
Then I found one of my half shaft UJ's has totally shed all of it's needle rollers.
Then I found my inner half shaft bearings are chipped.

Where do I stop?

On a good note I bought swivel kits from paddocks for £69.00 a side including taper bearings seals gaskets and grease. Pretty good I thought.

I had a similar thing myself back in May. I needed to change a wheel bearing and ended up rebuilding the whole axle. I even needed to replace the stub axle carriers which cost a fortune for the later Series 3 type . All the better for being done though and worth it in the end

Where did you find your brakes, were they expensive? I really want some for mine but buying NOS is very expensive and no joy elsewhere...

No not too expensive. Paid about £15 a piece for backplates and £65 for the axle set of Shoes, cylinders, springs and drums. So about £95 the lot.

Got the backplates from a guy local to me. He has quite a few in stock. The axle set of brake components came from ebay. They are blue box parts but I haven't had a problem with their brake parts before.

I made up the new brake pipes myself.

Where did you get the backplates, I'd really like to be able to stop! If you've got a number that would be great!

I've had one leaky brake cylinder and one leaky clutch master cylinder from the blue meanies but then again I've had leaky genuine cylinders in the past (not land rover).

Who doesnt have problems with blue box parts? I would rather pay more for better quality and do the job once with parts that fit without fettling.

Yup, accidentally got some rear shoes from the blue boxers last year - only realised when I had the Landy up on stands with the drums off so I fitted them. After 5 miles down the road the drums were smoky hot, I ended up re-profiling the shoes with a grinder...

Once they'd bedded in after that they were ok.
