Hi all,

Just picked up a new RRC yesterday and on the way back the brake servo (I assume thats what it is) mounted at top of drivers wing started buzzing and making a bad noise.

Unplugged it and it stopped but the brakes didnt work!!

Any ideas / Suggestions? This is my first classic

If like the P38 it has the WABCO system, the spherical pressure reservoir may have failed so the pump has to run all the time, either that or the pressure switch.

Does it keep running with the ignition off???

There is a relay under the Passanger seat that sticks and makes the pump constantly run and run till it burns itself out (happened to my '93)....check this out.

Also what year is it??

The pump will buzz when working but it should not be a "bad noise" and also, the pump should not run for very long. If the pump is continuously running or switching on and off a lot then there is a problem, could be pressure switch, pressure accumulator or a relay like Saint said or there could even be a leak. If the pump is very loud the pump might be on its way out.

You need to sort this ASAP as your brakes are safety critical, make sure you deal with this properly - no room for short cuts or penny pinching on brakes.

I have a '95 LWB County, and I've owned it for 2+ years, but I'm not an ace LR mechanic. I replaced a dead battery yesterday, and when I got home with my happy new battery, the "air compressor-like thing on the left front fender, er, wing, kept running for much longer than it's normal five or 10 seconds after key-off. I thought that it was the suspension air compressor, so I unplugged it. As noted, the brakes then stopped working. I plugged the "air compressor" back in, and the brakes worked, but the mystery device runs perpetually, until it gets so hot that I unplug it. Q: Why does Land Rover need a &$*# air compressor for brake boost, when every other vehicle on the planet uses engine vacuum? Q: If this is the electrical component under the passenger's seat, can I get a new one, or tap on it with a whitworth wrench, or ???

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!
