Hi, am about to knock up a set of brake pipes for my '95 disco1 - can anyone pls confirm correct size copper pipe? Am guessing 3/16??
Also - should I be looking for anything in particular when buying a flare tool? Am hoping to get away with a cheapie!!
Thanks :)

I,ve got a corroded rear brake pipe on my Disco 1, and am going to buy a cheap flaring set ( £ 8 ish ) and 25 foot of 3/16 pipe from me local car shop. ( £ 10 ).

I,ll keep an eye on this thread incase I,m wrong !!!.

Del.

those cheap flaring tools are a COMPLETE waste of money

send me the bits and the lengths and i'll put some proper flares on for the cost of the return postage

bet the OP still goes out and buys one

yer most likely,

i looked at a SYKES copy  at the 4x4 show this year, wer not the quality tool i was expecting, just a cheap replica, made of monkey metal and creme cheese  still £50 tho

so ......yer sorted me a set out yet :)

i use a cheap machine mart one and it does every thing i want it to do we have a good quality one at work but find taking every thing to the vice a pain in the bum if you say you need to take a couple of inches off a pipe

I've got the Sykes Pickavant Flaremaster II tool - it cost a lot but as I ended up having to redo the entire brake lines for the rear brakes (from the ABS modulator all the way through to the rear calipers) there were quite a few flares and being able to make them on the car saved me a lot of headache.

now i've found someone who can properly harden them i'll make another set of punches when i get time, the clamps are only a tenner to buy - both mine are SP 220 series and take the 270 series clamps - the FlareMaster is a different design

those cheap one's can produce a reasonable flare, maybe 1 out of 10 will be FULLY properly formed - the others might seal but you'll have to do the fitting up barsteward tight, others will either leak after a very short while, or will leak however tight you do the fitting up

use a proper tool and it'll produce properly formed flares EVERY TIME that only need to be nipped tight to get a seal - i wonder how many cylinders have been wrecked from having the fitting sheared in half due to the previous owner having to swing off their spanners to get it tight enough to seal

i see your point sean, but unfotunatley this is the first ever flaring kit ive used i did practise a fair bit first untill i got the flares spot on every time,i replaced the whole lot on the disco 3months ago for the mot and only had to nip them up then but now you've pointed out the possible down side's to the cheap kits i'll keep an eye on them ive had no leak's sofar and fingers crossed i wont.

sorry but i have to disagree never have to over tighten fittings to make them seal and as i have said i do have use of a good quality tool but i am very happy with the quality of the flares from the machine mart tool i would not use it if there was any problems

OK Sean, without spending silly money - wots the concensus on a good tool?

Sykes 220, 270 or FlareMaster or a Moprod Easyflare - if you can get any of those for less than £50 buy them instantly

Brake Pipe Flaring Tool On The Vehicle Or On The Bench on eBay (end time 07-Apr-10 18:45:04 BST)

FACOM FTC05 BRAKE PIPE FLARE KIT 5PC SAE on eBay (end time 09-May-10 16:46:35 BST)

these are a pair of my 220s - these have done 1000s of flares, and will do many many 1000s more
