Brake peddle clicks and sometimes nothing there....

Not just how much but also are there any garages or anyone else that can fit the kit as and when you get one? I pride myself on being able to top up my washer bottle and I even topped up the oil and engine coolant today but stripping anything else down would lead to a far greater disaster than any brake failure could ever be. Does anyone know of anyone in/near Lincs or Notts that can fit the mod? Of course I'd be keen to know how much it's likely to be also.
 
Hey guys little confused about the whole thing here. I have a 99 bosch and it seems to do the same thing. Was this so called clicking thing only up to mid year 99 or did it extend into later years with the 4 wheel tc. Read lights and got a wheel sensor code. I'll start there and check back. Thanks
 
Do you mind saying how much it cost to have the modulator kit fitted?

Not sure yet, I have a sort of........well, cash agreement with my mechanic, he'll tell me how much he wants when his back pocket gets low of beer tokens, and its usually nowhere in line with any other garage. :)
 
OK, so after repairing the Modulator with the kit..
It did stop the click.
Was great instructions, and easy to follow and do.
It did take all weekend though... with the right kit, tools and workshop.

Shortly after...
The brake peddle wont always return once pressed and its making a constant pumping sound, and sometimes there is no brakes at all when I first start the car.

I took it to a local landy mechanic to check I had bled the brakes and he bled again and he says they are bled properly.

He is not sure what's going on, maybe the nitrogen expansion tank, he suggest a 2nd hand modulator from a contact who has got a good one. £175 plus delivery.
I am happy to get it and replace (is it easier 2nd time?), but is this the problem?

OK, so the repair kit did not fix modulator.
Brought a good 2nd hand one £175, worked a treat.

Replacing this part some how broke the ABS pump so the whole lot stopped working.
Brought a new one for £400 as the breakers had one they got in for someone else.
And replaced the relay as i was there anyway. (£30)

Now need to fit and bleed, then fingers crossed should be sorted.

Blimey Brakes are expensive on P38's

Modulator New £3000 (ha ha ha) 2nd hand sub £200
Pump new £800-£1200 (ha ha ha) 2nd hand £100 - £250 if you can find a good one.
ouch.

On the plus side, having taken the modulator in and out so many times, I'm quite quick at it now. :) every cloud..... etc etc

Seems really complicated and over priced to me...
 
Not good news....

The first new pump, wouldn't work after fitting.
Turned out to be duff and it was brand new....
I splashed out....
Did get a replacement, for free, except postage.

The new pump works, but runs all the time.
The modulator wont bleed properly and there is no pressure behind the brakes.
Its now at a land-rover specialist, and they are a bit lost.
They cant work it out.

Surely, I wont have to scrap it...
but the brakes, just wont come back online...

very very sad.... and broke now... LOL

ow dear.my sympathies,this kit has never entered my reasoning,i have read alot abt it,it has worked with some and not with others,well at the end the modulator is a "non servicable unit" and messing with it will have an effect,i have the click on the pedal since i got rangie,i am saving to replace it with a second hand one although i know it will fix it temporary,then it is the same again,but hell it is better than installing the kit and suffering and ending up replacing the modulator again.even if we can't afford a new modulator,but it seems it is the only way out of the pro well at least for 5 years we will not worry abt the damn click to re appear.

I think I'm with you Jorjio. The click is a pain and when you forget about it and it happens it startles you a bit, but given the hit/miss ratio with the kit and the hassles I think I will grin and bare it. As with all the other problems. Character?

Given my very low annual mileage and why I bought the car in the first place, hopefully it will hang on in there for a while until it takes that final journey to the breakers in the sky. Fingers and everything else crossed.

As long as you don't get total brake failure and end up in heaven with the P38. Read the reports on total brake failure:eek:
 
OK, so I found it....
Brakes are finally working....

There is a micro filter in the outlet from the brake fluid resoviore.
It was blocked, once cleaned it all came back to life.

I can only presume that the movement of the vessel loosened some built up muck from the inside of the plastic, which had built up over the years.....

what a task............
but brakes work really well now.

Mind you, alarm, CD and interior lights have stopped working now....

what is it with these motors.....
