So being new to all this (see post accidental clueless owner) how would I establish part numbers for non standard parts. For example my 1990 defender has a disc brake conversion and I want new rear pads. How would I work out which pads I need?

Take it to kwik fit and sit back and smile knowingly to yourself.
Take it to a reputable garage.
Take one of the pads to a reputable factors.
Take measurements of the discs and pads and speak to a reputable factor.
Guess.

Lots of the parts factors will have the sizes of the pads listed.
It is most likely a std land rover axle, so pads wont be nothing special or expensive, tenner a set is quite normal for defender/disco 1 pads.
