Brake Lights Staying On

Noticed today that the brake lights are staying on all the time, even when the engine is off and the iginition is on with the dashboard lights lit.
I'm guessing its the switch that is at fault??? Could this be the cause??? If so, is it easy to fix for a non mechanic???
We've just paid to have the slave and master cylinder replaced this week. Could the replcement of these clutch parts affected the brake lights staying on permanently???
Its a 1.8 petrol.

I have just had a quick look at the Rave manual and it would appear that the brake light switch is on the brake pedal. So if the garage changed the clutch master cylinder they would have had to work very close to the brake pedal under the dash. It would seem that the switch is also connected to the ABS ECU, so I would investigate asap as not only would driving it on the road be illegal but it might also cause a problem with your brakes as the abs thinks you have pressed the pedal.

If I was you I would get my head under the dash by the pedals and see if I could find the switch. The switch is mounted towards the top of the brake pedal and is a sort of quarter turn to lock in place.
It looks like if the switch has come loose then the lights would be on! If you have the Rave manual there is a procedure for resetting the brake switch its section 70.35.42 (Workshop manual, service procedures, brakes, repairs, switch stop light).

Oh thanks for your help. No, I have not a RAVE or Haynes manual. Does the Haynes manual tell you how to reset it? Was going to buy a Haynes.

I think I should take it back to the garage and say to them that the lights have been on since when I got the car back Thursday, after the 2 cylinders were replaced. Seems a big coincidence that this has happened at the same time, but I know that is cars in general.

All sorted now. The mechanic I know just turned the switch and it now works. Said should be a better design and something to secure it from getting knocked.
