Hi all, had the Three Amigo's showing and the local garage who diagnosed said the shuttle valve had failed.

Got a new one and after a couple of days the lights came back and again diagnosed as the shuttle valve.

Just spoken to the people that supplied it and they said that the valve would be fine and it was a problem with the modulator itself and that this would give the same code as a faulty valve.

Two questions;

1) Does this sound right as I don't want to spend a fortune on a modulator if I don't have to.

2) As it is an electrical issue, would replacing the ECU for the ABS fix the problem as this would be a fair bit cheaper, and if so, would it work properly with the car without having anything done to it?

1. Unfortunately YES.....try to find a guaranteed second hand one(that's what a friend of mine with same problem as yours did and no probs anymore).....or if u are handy and technical minded enough u can try this ABS Mod - Land Rover Club V.I.

2. NO

That looks scary!! I suspect its easier than it looks but has potential to go wrong in a big way

Have been put onto a company that will refurbish your unit with a 2yr guarantee for £200 (luckily based just up the road from me) so here is the link in case it helps anyone else :)

Land Rover Discovery ABS Pump / Module ECU WABCO

It worth a try for that price(my friend spent about £300 for the second hand one from a hungarian LR braker.... guaranteed for shorter time) ........go for it and tell us after ...i saved the link for hard times...tks;)

By the way, be aware, its not just a simple "replace it and go" job....u have to plug into a dedicated tester and bleed it properly too.

dealt with ecu testing before, replaced the shuttle valve on me old mans motor prior to him touring norway. 5000 miles in 4 weeks, abs light came back on week after he got back. they took unit back and rectified fault. (shuttle valve according to diagnostic) only cost was the downtime and commute from west yorks to nottingham two drop off and collect twice.
lights been out about 8 weeks now.
would recomend getting faults read by more than one reader tho, as first time round it came back with shuttle valve (so we removed mod and took it to ecu testing) when we reset it, then got a n/s/f sensor fault. we changed this (complete assy) but arent sure if it really needed it. the mot was due just prior to the holiday and he wanted to make sure lights stayed out.

edit- didnt have a problem bleeding brakes, but we used low pressure air on resovoir and cracked nipples. brake pedal wasnt pressed till all fluid was in.

Yeah, know about the bleeding the brakes, but I didn't think it needed to be plugged in other than to clear the fault code

Yip, according to RAVE its not mandatory to be plugged in for else than clearing the codes but if u want to do a good job(and taking into acount that u're already plugged) its good to be sure that the modulator itself is clear of air too.... for that u must activate every inlet/outlet valve through the tester during the brake bleeding procedure.......as i said its not mandatory but recommended(just in case u can do it without paying lots of money for that).

quite new to this forum, so excuse my ignorance. but what is/are the three amigos? and is it it really that complicated to bleed the brakes? it`s a five minute job on my motorbike.

If you do a search you will find loads of info on the Three Amigos, it is when a fault with the braking system or wheel sensors cause the ABS, hill descent and traction control lights to come on either intermittently or permanantly.

What bike you got?

ta for the 3 amigos reply.
i use a honda benly for work, i`m a courier in central london. used to use cx500`s but they were getting hard to find good ones. also got a 79 xt500, 81 rd350lc, 1961 triumph tiger, 1979 honda xl100 and a 91zzr1100c just got a 50cc honda twist and go for my daughter. luckily my neighbour lets me keep some of the bikes in her garage. so what about you?

Nice list

Well as my username suggests I currently ride a 2002 Triumph Daytona 955i, but also have a 1990 Honda CBR600 FL that I am doing up as a winter project and will be the wifes birthday present for next year :)

i bought the xl100 about 25 years ago when my wife wanted her own bike.she used it for about a year but never took her test. she`s made me hang onto it for sentimental reasons. glad she did coz my kids are all keen to learn to ride.
never been a fan of cars. but am enjoying owning and driving the td5. just ordered a hawkeye. hopefully save me money in the long run.

Yeah, I've just brought one and its already saved me £60 (what the local dealer charges for diagnosis), or cost me money if you take into account that it's told me things are broken

A good bit of kit and the guys at Bearmach have been really helpful.
