Brake discs - solid to vented

Hi all

I have a 1.8s Freelander Mk1 (2002). At the moment is it fitted with solid discs but I know that I need to change these (binding probs). I usually buy my LR parts from Island 4x4 as they are really great on pricing (Euro Parts offer discs at £27 per disc and I can buy discs and pads from Island for £37.49/pair).

BUT the downside is they only supply vented ones and say in the description "New set of brake discs and pads which fit all Freelanders with vented front discs (from around year 2000 before this the brake discs are solid)"

Will this mean that my FL has been fitted with solid and should have been vented and can I therefore now change to vented?? btw I do not have the standard Land Rover wheels/tyres on the vehicle as previous owner put low profiles and alloys

in order to fit vented disc you will need to change the front brake calipers front brake carriers and both front wheels as there all different

It would be a silly person that changed discs from vented to solid. It could be that you Freelander was registered in 2002 but was a pre 2000 version. Checking the chassis No is the only way to tell. Post 2000 Freelanders should have vented discs, wider calipers and the wheels to accommodate them.

Binding is usually caused by the caliper sliders or pistons sticking, not the discs.

perhaps the previous owner changed from vented back to solid to accomodate the new wheels, as this would allow the smaller caliper to be fitted.

Never come across anyone making their brakes a lower spec before. I would think it is a late registered vehicle.

Never mind the fact that it could possibly invalidate the insurance!!
Late registration was my first thought too, easy Confirmed by chassis number check.

I seen it a few times. Numptys changing there breaks at home and not checking what they are putting on.

It should be easy to do, as the discs are thinner and so the pistons will just stick out further than they should with the possibility of coming all the way out...... That don't sound so good.

If you use a vented disc caliper on a solid disc, there is a real possibility that the pads could fall out before the pad is down to backing material!!

What is the 10 th digit of the chassis number? That will tell us what year it is.
