I just replaced the brake discs/pads on my friend's 2005 Freelander and noticed that the rubber seal on one of the caliper pistons was split. The piston looked OK and doesn't appear to be rusted or siezed. How easy is it to replace the seal? Do I have to remove and dismantle the caliper?

Hi

If its the same caliper as my TD4 2000 then no you don't have to remove the caliper but you'll need to be at least treble jointed.

Its a complete and utter pig of a fiddly job. The seal fits inside a recess in the piston housing and then attaches to the piston itself.

The problem is getting it located inside the caliper piston housing then inserting piston. Best done in a nice warm garage with a clean bench to work on and plenty of tea and coffee.

I had no choice but to find out as my piston was rusted up and caused my front brakes to over heat.
