Hi

Bought myself an ex-arrmy 110 yesterday. This is my second one and am so happy to have another landy again.

This one has strange electrics (has the convoy switch/knob in the middle of the dash). Think i have figured it out lol

I have a couple of issues which I need help with. First one is the brake lights. They just arent working. I have checked the fuse's and all seem ok. Not sure if i have done something wrong with the convoy switch on dash.

I have also noticed that on both rear shocks, the outer case has corroded and fallen down the shafts exposing the pistons. Are the shocks an easy diy job to replace? (any guides anywhere)

The engine is a 2.5 diesel N/A. It pulls really nice and seems ok. Have noticed when pulling away hard that I get abit of dark smoke out the exhaust. Should I be worried? Any treatment things you recommend?

The last problem is with the gearstick. Its quite floppy even when in gear. Whats the cause of this and is it easy to fix. Gear selection is fine.

Hope you guys can advise me. I am still learning lol

Whilst the brake lights arn't working, check whether the horn and indicators also work.

If they all don't, then it'll be down the 6 way light switch. If it's turned to the "C" or "C&S" (convoy, or convoy & side) then everything else (horn, brake lights, indicators, hazards etc) are turned off.

If however, everything else works and it's just the brake lights, and the fuse is OK, check the switch that's on the top of the pedal.

Shocks are a 5 minute job to change, unless the nuts have rusted up.
usually a 19mm spanner, undo the top nut, crawl underneath, grab the lower part of the shock with your hand or a pair of stilsons (wrap the shock in a rag if you're planning to re-use it and don't want to damage it) and undo the lower nut.
remove and swap.
if the lower nut is rusted to buggery and you're going to replace it anyway, get out the hacksaw/air gun and force it off.
If the top nut shears the threaded part of the chassis mount off, then you'll need to get a new one (about £5~ £10 second hand on ebay)

the 2.5's do smoke a little. if it's black smoke, then check the air filter isn't dirty.

gearstick flopping.... remove the rubber gaiter off the top of the transmission tunnel, then remove the top casing off the 'box (Where the gearastick goes in) and you'll see a shaft, with a "cup" on it (where the ball on the end of the gearstick locates into) this cup is held on with a grub screw. these quite often come loose, so remove the grub screw, clean it of oil, apply some thread lock then crank it back up again.

hope that helps.

The outer casing on the rear shocks is normally just a plastic tube that is a push fit.
Try sliding them back up. I took mine off to clean and paint my rear shockers and they look brand new. Why change them if they're OK?
