Hello again boys
Sorry for being away from the sight for a while. Er indoors keeps me working too much. I only get a break when I come back to work. Well, gone and bought myself a Classic to go with the P38. Its a 1990 Vogue SE 3.9 in Beluga Black. Found the usual faults so far
Sagging headlining
Clunking going into reverse
Clicking CV joint
Noisy heater fan
AC doesnt work (no surprises there)
Tailgate that opens itself at 90 on the motorway (helps the aerodynamics) its a bit rusty as well
Chassis and body mounts look OK as do the inner wings. Worst rust is at the bottom of the rear arches inside the doors and the bottom of the B pillar. MOT time next month will determine whether Ive bought a lemon or not.
Superb engine though. Runs like a train. Compression 160 170 all cylinders. All good tyres (Michelin Synchrones). Gearbox OK apart from clunky reverse (transfer box?). Interior reasonable apart from headlining mentioned and a centre console thats been in bits and never put back together properly.
Gave it a basic service of oil/filter/plugs/dizzy cap and rotor arm/4 belts/thermostat and coolant change so its now running pretty well. Averaged 14 coming back from Kettering to Blackburn at a steady 85ish, then only did around 10 around town but was never warming up. New thermostat cured that and now doing much more but had to come back to work before I could brim it again.
Good points as comfortable as the P38, nearly as quick and actually sounds nicer bit more of a burble
Bad points wanders a bit but with 80 series tyres as against 60s on the P38, Im not surprised and it has the most stupidly placed door rest/pull Ive ever come across guaranteed to **** your elbow every time you want to steer but hey who needs two hands to steer one anyway? Secret is to relax and waft along I think.
Because of this new arrival (and one or two others), the poor old P38 has been a bit neglected and has hardly moved off the drive. More to be done next time home. I just hope the chap with the welder doesnt have too much to do on the Classic.
Cheers
Derek
