Both door cables disconnected... how to open lock?

Bought a Freelander 2 (2007) model, lock failing in the front left door - bought a new one online and fitted to the door. A few weeks later disaster has struck - both cables came out of lock mechanism (exterior and interior handle cables).

So front left door is closed and unable to open - have been trying to work out best approach, including snapping door card off and buying a replacement from scrape yard, to gain access to lock cables. But before taking such dramatic action I thought I would ask... any way to open a FR2 lock without cables connected to it?

From memory there is a way to remove both the external door handle and the door card with the door closed. Once either is off, you might be able to reach the lever on the lock with a length of coat hanger or other suitable wire.
