Bosch VE pump technical question

This should be a test to see who knows their fuel pump trivia!
On the Bosch VE pump the LDA boost adjuster aka the 'star wheel' is threaded on, the replacement does not come pre threaded, I assume it should self thread as it's screwed on, however obviously it will require some force to do so. Seeing as it's quite soft metal and having taken quite a chunk out of my existing one trying to free it up I'm not keen to graunch it round with the grips. Is there a special tool for it? Like a star wheel shaped socket? Or failing that does anyone know the thread size and pitch so I can tap it myself?

You are probably the only person in the history of the universe ( excluding diesel specialists ) who has ever needed to replace with a new starwheel.

As Lynall says, I would be looking to get to a specialist near you and ask them to fit it.

Yeah I thought I might be, there are a few threads in various forums with people asking how to free up a stuck one but not much after that, I can confirm however, the answer to 'how do I free up my siezed star wheel?' is not 'give it a few light taps with a hammer and drift!'

Why not give a diesel specialist a shout, and ask them if they will sell you a star wheel. I am sure they have a box of junked pumps and most of them will have good starwheels in them , it is not as if they wear out.

are you asking about the "alloy" wheel which adjusts the pre-load on the boost spring?

There is a lorry fitters about half an hour away I've done a bit of electrical work for, I might give them a ring and see if they've got anything.

Yeah that's the one

i cannot imagine why the new one has no thread as it is designed to be adjusted when pump is rebuilt and is retained by a horseshoe shaped spring clip, it should just click as you turn it.

what part of the country are you in

You could always ask on the site to see if any of the nice folk on here have a knackered FIP sat in a box somewhere?

Maybe one of them could remove the starwheel and send to for a few beer tokens, you never know your luck.

Only the same as the others have said, see if they have an old one you can buy.
I did look at my spare pump and the thread is quite fine and a large diameter, so I dont think it would self cut, and diy threading it and getting the thread dead square would be bit of a challenge.
Did not reply last night as had to shoot out.

Recent thread where lz member is going to send a few pumps to dieselbob for repair in exchange for one good one, might be worth a search and chat him up?
Or just ring dieselbob?

Yeah seemed like maybe m17/M18ish but with a <1mm pitch, quite an odd size no doubt!

Several members on here have used it and he comes highly recommended,

an email with your issue and see what he suggests etc.

Well I didn't have much luck (and I also realised it's not my first 'what thread is X part' post on here and prob won't be the last) so I bought a thread gauge and a Vernier caliper. The Answer is M17x1.0, so it's here if anyone else ever needs to know! I've ordered the corresponding tap so I'll let you know how it goes.
