I was thinking you could use this method to rig up a dish-type mount on the roof, boosting the signal even more!

Just tried this and b*gger me, it only works.
My laptop went from seeing three local networks to twelve and I was able to connect to six of them with no security protection. I did not do the salad bowl trick but hey - you learn something new everyday.
