I intend to put a new electric fan on my 97 300dti behind the grill, but to get the grill off I need to remove the small panels at either side and I am not sure wether they are held with clips or bolts or what. I do not want to force them in case they crack. Any help welcome on how to safely remove them. Mick.

those panels are help in with two self tapping screws on the top and three lugs at the bottom. Yu remove screws then pull the top forward and up out of the locating lugs at the bottom. sometimes it is trapped behind the front bumper.

I dont have an electric fan, but opinions on the location of a electric fan seem to have changed in favour of a fan that sucks air and therefore easy to install at the back of the rad in the engine bay and as a replacement for the existing fan that sucks air.
The few modern cars that I have looked at have fans at the back of the rad.

The panels I need to remove are the small ones that go round the corners under the headlamps but slightly overlap the edge of the grill trapping it. So these have to come off first and there are no self tappers in sight. So how are these held on???????

Remove the indicator light, Undo the retaining screw and nut then remove the trim from under the headlamp unit, bending very carefully and slowly to free the locating lugs at either end. Same thing on the other side then undo the the grill retaining screws.
