BMW diesel engine

I believe it was 2001 shortly after Ford bought the company. It was introduced at the same time as the V6.

I deduce that BMW who bought the Rover group in 1994 wanted to replace the 'L' Diesel with their own TD4 engine.

However by the time that was fully developed and the first cars came off the line with BMW engines (late 2001) - they had sold the company on to Ford in 2000.

Ford then started work on a 'new' Freelander with a different engine, before selling both LandRover and Jaguar to Mr Ratan Tata - the current owner.

Wonderful name that - Ratan Tata.

It would have been interesting to see what they could have come up with. Turbocharged 1.8 petrol would have been nice, one that was a little more fool proof .

My TD4 was registered in december 2000 , So is an early one .

Those last 2 posts - #9 and #10 are very interesting.

I can't believe that there is such a thing as a 2000 Freelander with a BMW M47R engine.

Could have been factory prototypes - but highly unlikely.

TD4s are badged as TD4 - the L Series engined ones are badged Di or XDi

If you can't recognize a TD4 engine the guaranteed check is to take out the dipstick and look at both sides of the yellow finger-pull. There you will find the letters - BMW.

Just for info - the TD4 engine was built in Steyr, Austria. I wouldn't recommend going into a bar there and telling them they are 'krauts'!

They are no more 'krauts' than the car-factory workers in Cowley building the Mini.

But maybe some people think that the Mini is a 'kraut' car ...... but never mind.

Series Two or MY01

MY - Model Year

The Series Two was the model for 2001, and a lot of work was done to improve the Freelander. Firstly all new specification levels were announced, these were S, GS and ES.

The new Freelanders are instantly recognisable by the clear front indicator lenses, but amber side repeater lenses.

Improvements were

Exterior - All models

2 new engines 2.5V6 petrol and 2.0 Td4 diesel
New engine immobiliser
New electrical architecture
Optional folding mirrors
New engine mounts
5-speed Steptronic automatic transmission
New bumper on all models and a larger version on the V6
New steering rack
V6 revised underpan
Clear front indicator lenses
ABS, ETC, EBD, HDC as standard on all models
New wheels and brake system
New Macpherson struts
Interior - All models

Increased capacity airbags
Dual tone horn
New instrument pack with warning lamps
Lumbar support on 3-door models
Re-designed centre console
New high centre console
Electric rear windows in 5-door
Improved ventilation, heating and air conditioning
Pre-tensioner seatbelts with load limiters
Upgraded ICE with steering wheel controls
Interior - ES models

Leather steering wheel
Leather gear lever knob
leather seats trim
heated front seats
Illuminated passenger sun visor

So it came out with the 2001 model year!

I have all those things,
TD4 engine, Steptronic Auto, Bigger Vented discs and calipers, clear lenses, "S" trim badge on side ..etc etc.
VIN beginning with A etc tec.

All on an X plate 5door registered in December 2000
- which is regarded as the Model Year 2001
Everything on it relates to the 2001 model when I buy spares

Seems like you are correct.

My apologies for doubting you.

It seems that I was a whole year out, and they started production in Oct 2000 - not Oct 2001 as I was led to believe.

That's the third new thing I have learnt today.

So congratulations, Mark2 - you obviously have one of the very first TD4s to be built.

It has always worried me when I read the horror stories that others have with newer TD4s
Though I have had my fair share of issues

One plus is that the being pre Y reg (March 2001) .. the Auto is only around £200 for Tax Disc being a PLG rather than taxed on the emissions which tip the Auto into one of the much higher categories with the Y plate onwards.

These VED categories are a load of complete bo**ocks.

No logic in them at all - typical HMG.
