Having only had my landy for a month I'm a bit worried about its newly developed smoking habit

When I first bought the car, for the first few days it started up with a single puff of WHITE smoke. In the next few days this developed into a single puff of black smoke, and then most recently it's started to puff out blue smoke when I have been starting it up on these cold mornings. It's not horrendously bad but it feels slightly hesitant to start from cold (even with a bit of glow plug). The smoke clears up completely after about 1/2 a mile, and is absolutely fine for the rest of the day - no smoke at all on heavy acceleration, overrun or deceleration. I'm not 100% sure but I think it might be using a little bit of oil somewhere too, the level dropping slightly since I've had it.
Any ideas what could be causing it? :) Cheers

Forgot to mention it's a 200tdi :D

Ok thanks :)

Only reason I tend to stick a few seconds of plug on in the mornings is due to the fact that I lived with a terrible old 19j engine for a while which needed at least 20 seconds of plug before it would wheeze and groan into life. :D

I got a 200 tdi to and its black on start (normal) but then def blue when it revs. Seems to clear up at normal op temp but if i stop and hang out the passenger door and rev it you can see puffs of blue. Using half litre of oil a month 10/40 part synthetic halfords....think its ok? Am worried but again after having a 19j dog of self exploding **** am i just worrying about nothing?

Quick question, how likely is the cause of this problem likely to be the Valve Stem Seals?

Symptoms now are sluggish starting first thing in the morning or after being left for a day, and a fair amount of blue smoke as I drive for the first half a mile or so. It seems to be getting worse with the colder weather.

Also, how difficult is it to change these stem seals?

Thanks :)

I think it is very possible your blue smoke is oil that has leaked down past the seals. Can easily be changed in situ. You need to bring the piston up on the valves you want to work on, this means they cant fall down. so 2 and 3 up means you can do 3456 etc...
