after doing a search on the net fer you and finding brazillions of web site that have info about smoking engines, they all state;, as is the general opinyin on here, that blue smoke is from burning oil. the only one to differ slightly has this to say
"In Diesel engines, a pale blue smoke may mean that air is sucked into the fuel system, which would mean you have a problem with your fuel pump or the fuel pipes. "
now speaking generally if you had an autobox you might have bin sucking g/box oil up the vaccumm pipe which lots of autos have. but yer int got an auto so we can rule that oot. so am thinking how else can yer get oil from the g/box to the engine, as you seem sure it int engine oil burning.
my thoughts took me to a vaccum operated diff lock. which yer may or may not have

Are you sure that your sump only has oil in it?
Could be that fuel is topping up the sump, giving the impression that you are not using oil, when in fact you are?

ah think it would highly unlikely that the amount of fuel getting into the sump would equal what oil was coming out

Maybe if i try to explain better when and where it smokes maybe that will help;
Start up - Fine no smoke
First set off - Lumpy and trail of smoke after 100m its fine all gone
Tick over - Fine no smoke at all
30mph driving - Fine no smoke
Motorway driving - Fine no smoke
Fast Idle - after 20 seconds Smokes like a chimney until revved up (as if to clear it) or letting it drop back down to tick over and it stops
Also same gear driving for example in slow moving traffic say accelerating up to 15mph in 2nd then having to slow down again (as you are catching traffic) back down to say 10mph still in 2nd it will smoke then too until i either give it a good acelerate off to clear it or change up or down a gear this happens in 1st and 3rd also

I have seen a diesel smoking due to drawing air in to the fuel supply line to the pump (rubber priming pump perished) and this caused huge clouds of smoke, was only found by hand priming the line to get as much pressure in it as possible and then the pipe join began to weep.Is this a possibility on your disco?

In which case would somebody be so kind as to nominate me for the next noble prize as i seem to have found a way of burning oil without actually using any.
I keep repeating myself
but i will say it again, im not loosing any oil at all, none, nada, not a dropApologies for the sarcasm but i do seem to have to keep repeating myself, i understand where people come from if someone said to me my diesel is blue smoking yeah even my standard reply would be well its rings, stem seals or turbo, but the blue smoke is not engine oil

UPDATE: Problem sorted happy days, whoever had it before me had changed the timing belt and for some reason removed the pulleys and had put the cam pulley on the fuel pump and vice versa, everythings fine now no more smoke no problems at all, cheers for the help

I stand corrected about the engine oil, but at least I did drop in the possibility of the timing not being right.
It is fundamental to all diagnosis in engines that things like belt and chain timing of cams and pumps are set correctly.

Me too but more I notice it more when its dark.
Incidently, I once slowly tipped a thimble full of engine oil down the air intake of a diesel engine to prove a point to a friend and the smoke was incredible, how many thimbles of engine oil would need to be used to show up on a dipstick?
Also those of us with more mature years may remember tipping 'REDEX' down the carbs and getting abuse as the street diasappeared for about half an hour...................ahh those were the days when we lived in shoe box at side o road..............ya no sumin I remember the smog wen we wuz going out it wer as fik as pee soup...........................oops sorry just lightening the thread a little.
