blower motor fan speed control

Have a look! There will be 3 connectors on the speed control
Top 1 at the back is earth
Middle 1 slow speed
Bottom 1 fast speed

The selector arm is earthed so when it touches the part for slow it starts the fan, then when you move it down again it connects to the fast speed circuit

Simples :)

Hi everyone.

The fan speed selection switch in my 200tdi 1989 110CSW has been changed by the previous owner from the normal control slider (left of steering wheel) to a twist switch in the dash.

Setting 0 is obviously off.
Setting 1 is slow.
Setting 2 is fast.

When one setting 1 the fan is so slow hardly any air gets blown through to the vents.
On setting two the fan is so fast the warm air is cooled so cold once it gets to the vents.

Iv replaced the heater matrix and sealed every gap I can find.

Can I either speed setting 1 up or slow setting 2 down a bit to get a happy medium?

If so how?

What I'm thinking is that the switch fitted is a rheostat switch which reduces power on one and gives full power on two so one will give reduced power plus going through resistor will give very slow setting.

I would either wire the switch direct to the motor or replace it with a simple two way switch, on , off , on like an old light switch for instance:)

Oh and if it is a rheostat twist switch then post it to me if you take it off:D

This is a twist nob style switch, I think that's what your referencing. If I do end up having to change the switch I will post it to you.

From what I can see under the dash and bonnet it looks like the previous owner has simply taken the earth cable and two fan spread cables off the original slider switch and fitted it to the twist switch.

Not knowing anything about auto electrics I'm guessing the switching by have something to do with the speed.

I bet theirs a simple answer, I just don't get.

I think one wire goes direct to the fan and the other goes via a resistor for the slower speed and one earth wire.

If that is a rheostat switch then it reduces the power even before it goes through the resistor, I may have it all wrong but I would wire it into a standard light type switch with one position for slow and one position for fast which is what the slide control on the dash does anyway.

lets know how you go on:)
