Bloody ticking / tractor noise!

OK so it's back. I thought it was the manifold gasket, but alas, no.

Not sure if this vid will work, but you can just hear it in the background. I was hoping it was somehting vibrating but it's really evident in the cab now when driving, especially around 3k revs.

If i wind the window down it's not really obvious.

Any thoughts? Looks like I will do the HG after all to put my mind at rest!

If its 200 shove your hand down the back of number 4 and you will feel if its blowing, mine actually burnt the paint on the bulkhead!

Thanks - it's a 300tdi. I can't feel any blowing at all. There is some oil on the rear of the engine but I think this is from the old rocker gasket leaking.

So Annoying!

To be honest it doesn't sound too much like the head gasket to me.

Does it do it at idle? It would also make a lot more noise (kind of a chuffing) just before you start it when the pumps are going before the engine starts.

A good way to check is to tip water around the edges of the gasket and see if any is blown outwards.

No noise when idling really. I did the manifold gasket at the weekend and used a good quality one.

It does sound tappety - i've checked them too and adjusted a bit. All the heads are there....

Sounds a bit like mine and it turned out to be the passenger seat rails, easy to check just get someone to sit on it. Mine only rattled when it was moving.

Thanks - i've tried 12 people in it on every seat and it still does it. When it's warmed up, only the slightest amount of pressure on the accelerator, just the weight of my foot, and the noise starts.

Still not 100% convinced it's not just a rattle, but if it is i've no idea where it is coming from!

Interestingly it only does it when the vehicle is moving too, so not really linked to engine speed etc as I cant hear it when revving static.

If it's just when your foot is on the accelerator, could it be an injector pump noise? I'm not sure about Land Rovers but we had a bus once that made a very tappety noise which turned out to be the injector pump.

Lift pump me reckons.

Thanks gents - where is the 'lift pump' and how can I test it? Is it ok to drive like it whilst I'm trying to figure out what it is?

And is there a way of testing both said pumps?

Mine does this, not all the time but really annoying.
It's my fuel lines making the ticking noise, stick your hear under the drivers rear wheel see if it's that, pulses the noise down the lines making it sound like its in the engine bay.

well mine had a annoying rattle 2 of the rubber mounts on the air filter housing had failed
