So so so... this one I've been on here posting about, well, it's booked in for a Block Test to give an idea of the HG integrity.
It will show if there is ANY oil/water contamination and give me a picture of the state of the HG.
They said no point in doing a Hydrocarbon / emmissions test as it's just passed its MOT and would have been highlighted if it was a problem then, 2 weeks ago...

Thoughts?

The garage said the HC test wont point to HG failure!? They said thats just for emmissions... They'll do it no prob tho, but whats the point?

they talking ****e, if there are hydrocarbons in the coolant then there is a leak between coolant and combustion chambers, i.e a gap between hg and block, possibly pointing to HG failure and slipped liner!! its a 2 minute chemical test! an emissions test will also show coolant in the exhaust gasses but a reading could be off for other reasons!

if exhaust gasses are in the coolant you would expect some pressurisation of the coolant system though this may not be obvious untill the car has done a few miles whereas any H/C dissolved in the coolant will be picked up by the chemical test!

just my opinion but as i have said, yr spending 4.5k so a few quid is well worth the extra peace of mind.

And if its just a chemical test, is it not something that can be done by ourselves? Im guessing you place some chemical in the coolant tank and look for the result??

saw a hydrocarbon kit on fleabay the otherday for about £30,might be just as cheap to try it yourself,it,s only a case of pouring an amount of coloured liquid into a sniffer typr tube, and put it into the top of the expansion tank if it changes colour theres a problem if it don,t it probably ok

Vinny - yes for sure. Pouring strawberry syup in the coolant etc Bull!
Just get the emmissions checked n come back n talk to the guys on here that do actually know wot they r talking about (not including myself in that category byw).

with a chemical test the results are usually clear enough for anyone to see! and it only prove hc in coolant!

have stripped many a 3.9 for hg, liquid tests are crap, we tested by running up with coolant header cap off gas analyzer probe in engine bay for background HC, if it jumps when held over header tank it's hg

As Im understanding that, thats just the emmisions probe in the engine bay, with the coolent cap off? Correct? to see if it picks up emmisions suggesting a HG failure/leak...??
