Hi,
I recently bought my 1st Landrover ,a freelander 1.8XEi 1999, with 95k on clock a I am very happy with it...its beauty :)

Although have noticed few things that are worrying me, slighly.
1) On occasion when I pull away in 1st gear the car stutters as though its gonna stall yet ottimes it does not and takes away smootly.
I have lookeed at whether I pull the clutch up to fast or not revving enuff.
But so far can not see anything wrong with my technique, bben drivinn 13yrs so I am not a new driver....so can a bit embarresing when pulling away like a kangaroo:)

2) Also, and possibly slightly more worrying, I noticed on Saturday when checkin my fluids that there is a build up of black, soot like stuff on the top of my engine , left hand side.
I dont seem to lossing oil or anything...any ideas what thisisawwhat could be causingit??

Any hits or tips would be gratefully appreciated, i am a newbie to this site and to Land Rovers in general so please bear with me and forgive my daft questions.
Thanks

Guess the black stuff is either exhaust soot leaking from some part of the engine or rubber dust coming from a belt disintegrating, both should be easy enough to find.

From what I read the clutches are notoriousy problematic, in fact the whole vehicle is total crap.

Take a few minutes to search through the freelander threads, then shoot yurself in the balls.

But welcome.

Glad to hear that the black soot is not as serious a problem.
Any idea how I can check to see if it is either of the belts disentagrating or just exhaust fumes ???

Also the clutch was replaced about 20k miles ago.
I bought the car from the original owner and got a folder full of receipts and servcie history..everything form wiper blades, tyres to cylinder head and clutch.
I paid less that than 2k for it....so im still happy with my freelander.
Thanks for the advice

The belts would be obvious with dust and bits of rubber in that area as well, my money's on exhaust soot. If you get somebody to hold a rag over the exhaust tailpipe, trapping some of the fumes you might be able to hear and see where it's leaking, exhaust manafold, turbo, etc.
