Have been using the Synergy 2 on my TD4 for not far of a year now and love the improvements it has provided to performance. Mine is set at 10 (coz I'm like that!) but I do notice when pulling off from low revs I do leave a big cloud of black smoke behind me. From reading another thread this is over fueling, so several questions:

1) Other than for my pocket, is this bad?
2) Can it harm the engine in anyway?
3) Should I drop the setting down a bit?

Cheers

What MAF have you got? It's only supposed to be on 5 if you have the Bosch one. You may be over fueling - what MPG are you getting?

That is most like your problem - drop it down to 3 as a start. It is the same as 7 with a Pierburg MAF / in reality there are only 5 settings available.

30 mpg is not brilliant and it should be more like 35+ I am getting between 33 and 36 and I have an Injector down - semi fixed it and looking at the gauge for the miles I am improving on 35.

The Synergy is great but it will put extra strain on your injectors to keep a eye on them- any rough running or fluttering during acceleration. Hope this helps

Does seem a bit smoother now and a bit less smoke - might get a Pierburg MAF when I do the EGR mod. I didn't read the instructions just used Jeremy Clarkson logic of highest number = "POWER"...

Can't bring myself to drop it to 3 yet...

It's not the number it's what suits the state of your engine - lots of factors come to play as I have been finding out - at the moment with an Injector going down its best switched off!!! Just the MAF switch on.

Don't forget never select or switch it with the engine running - the ECU can be damaged I understand.

Doing the EGR and also the crankcase filter will see an improvement also. Well worth running some Millers injector treatment through - all helps to get rid of the smoke. I run mind on fully synthetic Mobil 3000 - it seems to like it! - I get it done for me at Kwik Fit of all places - they do a deal for £34 - oil and 6lts of the oil inc taking off the sump guard!

Ok, I've searched and this came up.

I have fitted a synergy 2A and since I was getting a lot of black smoke. I have now turned the unit off but it is still fitting and it is running as normal now. I am on setting 2 as I have the bosch MAF and an auto.

I have ordered a EGRV blank plate and need to order a BMW vortex crank case breather but I need to wait till pay day. I'll try the synergy when I have all the parts on.

I am going to put some cleaner in. Redex is usually on offer in either petrol stations or asda but it isn't at the moment!
