96 2.5DT Manual Rangie, 135k miles.

when i rev my rangie (3000rpm) especially in 1st & 2nd, i get alot of black smoke, and occasionally get a rattle sound, like when a petrol car hits 8000rpm.

I have recently had a new turbo, so fairly sure it aint that. could it be injector problem feeding too much fuel?

any ideas?

i can only describe it as like a pair of canastas :s. when it happens, as the rattle doesnt always happen, once it rattles, loses power until i select next gear. at the smae time as the rattle, i get a large plume of black smoke. it sounds bad dont it?

Can you check to see if you have a broken injector or seal, there should be two per injector. When I first got my Range Rover some of the seals were warn beyond use.

You may not be able to see a crack in the injector but chances are it will be there or it could even be one of the crimped connetors at the top.

When the engine is getting warm it may expand the problems. The black smoke i'd say is burning too much fuel

Don't think it could be the catalyst (although there is nothing in the MoT or usage regs which says you must have a Cat) you could try removing it and seeing if the rattle stops.
