Black smoke on start up

I own a 1993 Defender 110 200tdi which I have had for 14 years. It has been a fantastic vehicle which took me from Scotland to South Africa in 2007/2008 with no major problems.
Recently within the last year or so it emits a large cloud of black smoke on start up even when the engine is hot.
I would appreciate any advice/info
