hi all, i had an injector pump issue which seems to have been cured by (another) new lift pump. problem now is that huge cloud of black smoke on start up and loads of blue smoke when running seems very down on power too I have checked the turbo hoses and they have a bit of black gunk in them but not enough to be a blown turbo i think :) and the impellor shaft has about 1/2 mm of play so should be ok. Do you have any ideas ? especially as it is my only transport and i am working nights for the next three :(

could be a number of things, had a similar issue and tried swapping injection pump (no better), turbo (no better), injectors (no better).................


finally did a compression test to find worn rings and trying to run on own oil. New rings and rebore and its all sorted (pretty cheaply too if you can do it yourself) :)
 
well I have been running on veggie and other concoctions for about 18 months so i picked up a set of injectors fo £40 so we'll see what happens :)

How hard is it to do ? as in does the whole engine have to come out ?
 
engine does need to come out for rebore and hone ,rebore and hone £125 ish ,but if worn it will breathe heavy out of oil filler cap when removed ,i would definately check or change injectors as poor ones can burn pistons / heads
 
When I was an apprentice one of the first things we learnt about diesel was,
white smoke,= water, black,= unburnt fuel, blue,= oil

nearly , white if disappears straight from exhaust = water ,if hangs about unburnt fuel, black= poorly burnt fuel (more fuel than air for complete combustion blue is oil ,other fuels can lead to pump and injector wear through lack of lubricants in them 280 bar/4000 psi is fairly high pressure for rotary pump

so if i remove the filler cap after a run it will either suk in or blow out air ?
 
one of the other problems is ihave been using all kinds of crap fuel in it lol WVO waste engine oil etc and still trying to flush that through
 
If the engine is chuffing out the filler cap, thats back pressure from the crankcase = worn bore & piston rings
mind you it would be worth checking the breather system if you have been using the stuff you mentioned as it can sludge up

On a 200tdi you can get the pistons out of a disco engine while its in place but a defender engine has to be taken out thanks to 4 extra bolts holding the ladder to the bell housing. Not sure if this is the same on the 300tdi

If you only need to hone the bores it can be done in place but a rebore will require engine removal for either model.

Where is the breather system lol :) thanks for the advice BTW
 
If breather clean out does nothing to improve the situation,might be worth trying water injection to undo any ring gumming from the veg - mate of mine brought a transit back to life,doing this.Rigged up a spray bottle nozzle to the washer jet pump(clean water only)and fed this into the inlet pipework,DOWNSTREAM of the turbo-got the bus on a dual carriageway at about 50mph and operated the washer pump,did this for a mile or so.Completely transformed the engine back to as was-and 12 months on still as good today.
 
Cured it !! the injectors were completely cattled so much gunk on them i am surprised they worked at all so today new rear discs and a flush of the intercooler
