Bizarre reverse on 300TDI manual

When reversing and on dipping the clutch to freewheel back it comes to a stop with a feeling that the transmission is braking (not breaking). It doesn't do this in any forward gears. The clutch travel appears to be fine for gear selection Any ideas?

seems like the handbrake (transmissionbrake) system is due for an overhaul?

I agree Ormus. Hope he's not stuck in diff lock!

Thanks Ormus and Jedi. The diff lock light isn't on though I did use diff lock recently for some slippery stuff.
