my rangie is dead, engine has gone, so while I find the funds to get a new engine its going to have to stand out and I'm going to have to use my series one! My question is is there anything I need to do to it so its ok when I come to fit the new lump, which realistically is going to be next year, I'll be putting new air springs on when I get it going coz they're on their last legs. Also if I'm going to do it I might aswell do it properly so its a 4.0 at the minute, a new 4.6 costs the same so that's going to happen, but I could go mad an go even bigger couldn't I while I'm at it! Any ideas?
 
I've got a mate that specialises in rover V8 lumps for motorsport and allsorts, he's got some brand new 4.6's, been thinking about that but if I put a second hand lump in then I don't know what nick its in, he reckons I could strip it and repair/rebuild it for £1500-2000, and his brand new engines are only £500 more, I don't know, he's got some bigger capacity ones he says would fit straight on aswell,
thanks for the link but I think its possibly a bit risky buying a second hand one?

brand new 4.6 engines for £2000? sounds a good deal
 
I would go for the new unit option to be honest.

With regard to leaving it for a year, make certain the alarm is deactivated, doors unlocked etc when you disconnect the battery, don't want issues with the BECM locking down after you get the engine sorted.

You can obviously lock the doors manually one at a time, with the battery off.

obviously a NEW engine is better than a second hand one but having been through the mill with mine, if i were you i would seriously think about the cost and the value of the car. i intend keeping my car so i'm happy to spend the cash but if you are one of those frugal types it may be worth getting a second hand one, chuck it in over the w/end and bang it on ebay on the monday morning!!!
 
Yes I agree, if it wasn't in such good order in every other respect then I'd probably do just that, but as it is, and taking into account what I paid for it so far its worth me doing it, and I intend to keep it, am very impressed with it
 
I spoke to him about top hats coz that was my first thought he said in theory yes they work but in practice he wouldn't put his name to a repair with top hats. Seems a bit of a bodge? I duno I will save and put the best I can in it, in the meantime I've got to get used to 1950s comfort!
 
dunno about bodge, i think anything that solves a problem is a fix, maybe not entirely the best option but better than the original design i think!!!
 
I understand your reasoning going with a new engine, and keeping the car, its the way my own mind would wander.....

However coming back to cold harsh ecconomics, £2.5K buys you FIVE second hand engines..... or another P38!

Yeah, they are a risk..... but then you took the risk to buy a second hand car in the first place, didn't you?

And it doesn't have to be a 'forever' solution.

Would it not be worth the 'punt' to get and keep the motor in service, and get some value from it, and give you a bit more breathing space to decide better what yo really want to do long term, rebuilding original engine to go back in, or getting a brand new one?

And whether to get silly with it going hi-po in rebuild or spec of new mill?

In the greater scale of ecconomics £500 is a splash in the ocean, and shouldn't significantly delay saving up for the engine you really want; mean-while, keeps the car in use.....

.....and a car thats used tends not to decay like one in storage with bits rusting and siezing unseen.....

And I dont iomagine for a moment that you bought the car to decorate your drive, surely you WANT to be driving it, not looking at it sat falorn on the drive?
 
cheers for that, yet more words of wisdom from you! That does make sense, you might not say it if you could see my drive!!! But yer maybe a good second hand lump would tide me over while I decide what to do, and yer £500 is doable alot sooner than £2500, and yer, yet again everything you say makes sense!
