Hi everyone, I've been looking for a classic to lift and off-road for quite a few weeks. Haven't found one yet that ticks all the boxes, but saw one today which came pretty close. It's pretty clean with only 2 owners, although one did use it for off-roading as part of his job. It's pretty clean, having had a couple of new panels, replacement gearbox and good motor with 140k.

All the MOTs are there and advisory free (so I guess it was pre-checked every time...) but it's been very well maintained (load of receipts) and very clean inside (with a lovely roll cage!). It's had some welding and undersealing done (seatbelt anchors, inner wings).

Problem is there is still some rust on the inner wings and I can't tell if it's serious or can be cured with a bit of money and welding. It's inside my budget so happy to throw some money at a professional welder to get it done properly.

I've attached some pics (poor, but done with phone) and if anyone can offer any advice if this is just surface rust or more then I'd appreciate it. Couldn't put fingers through anywhere, but could break of bits of metal from the edges quite easy.

None of the Classics I've had (two) had any rust on the inner wings or arches, so I'm just not sure if it's a big deal or not!

Thanks alot!
Jock

Tap them with a small hammer. And i really mean tap very gently. If you get a ping ok a dull thud rotten. Try it on a known good part for the ping bit you will see what i mean.

Don't look to bad to me, inner wings are cheap enough to fix and fit....if the rest is good, then it is a good'un....precious few classics around without terminal rot these days...which is a shame as they are by far the best Range Rovers for class

Hi in previous life i was welder and fabricator and over the years laid under a few motors as a hobby, the pictures don't look to bad and the comments made by both wammers and saint are sound, just make sure to check the rest because unless you able to do the welding part yourself it does tend to be expensive these days. wire brush helps to see the good from the bad also.

Thanks very much guys, I will pop back and check it out with my small hammer (I think I have one somewhere, never needed anything other than large...)

Cheers!
Jock

Thanks for the advice all. I went back and checked again but just not sure. I never ignore a bad feeling. Best case I think would be 3 new inner wings. Funny you mentioned the rear A-frame as I wondered about that. Looked a bit more and it had a few holes in it that were just too deep for comfort. Thought I'd give it a miss.

AND

Just as well I did, cos I've got a much better one on E-Bay just this evening!! Will be posting here shortly!

:):):):D:D:D

I hope it's fate that has brought us together...
