Evening all!

So today's (potentially daft) question from me is related to the front suspension. In particular about how much "bounce" is normal from the front ..

I put new (std) shocks on about a moth after buying it as I thought there was a but too much bounce from the front when driving up tracks (light off road) and that made some difference but not a lot.

Just had the air "put back" on the rear and that's made loads of difference at the back So before I start looking at new/better shocks on the front I thought I'd check and see what normal is/feels like...

Disco is an 02 plate with ACE and Air on std shocks all round (less than 3 months old) and coil on front but no idea how old they are. 90k miles

Cheers!

As much as I appreciate what you are asking.

How do you expect anyone to define ,bounce and the levels it feels like?

Cheers

My bed is bouncy, but I bet it's not when a fat burd lies on it

Have you tried someone elses Disco to make a comparison?

I don't know anyone with a disco to compare with unfortunately. I have a mate with an new defender and that's stiff as a board. But not really a comparison!

Think I'm just going to change the shocks as it feels ****e

The "old" way of checking shock absorbers was to use all your weight to push down on each corner of the vehicle, one corner at a time.
When you've got the corner bouncing as well as you can, let go and watch how much bouncing continues. It should stop almost immediately, or at the most it shouldn't continue any more than about "half a bounce".
Any more than that and it's time to replace the shock absorbers. I would advise that you do both front or rear at the same time, if one side has gone, the other side isn't far behind.

Looking at the price of shocks I'd just replace them, and honestly I'd just stick to oil shocks if you want the best ride quality, gas ones are good but I found them to be a bit harsh as they seem to push the wheel into the potholes, or at least in my experience. And springs are about 50 each, but probably not needed.

Might be worth checking your coil springs Just replaced mine as one had broken right at the lower coil and not easy to see initially.

Thanks Griff, will have a look at that one eve Not checked them in detail tbh, had the front shocks replaced when I first got it but just assumed the springs would be OK (silly in hindsight!)
