Got new flange bolts for rear, but theres a bit more to fronts isnt there?

I did wonder about wheel bearings, makes sense doesn't it while I'm in there. Will definitely use timken :)

I was looking at box spanners, glad you mentioned to avoid them!

Just been over the brakes, theyre very good all round no kinked pipes, plenty of meat on pads and discs.

Ordered new nuts bolts and propshaft tool for rear shaft. Hoping to get away with just uj's on front as said.

I've bought 2 prop shaft "tools" in the past neither have fit or made anything any easier! I've always ended up using a short socket instead.

One tip when doing the swivels that I ALWAYS forget is stick a deep baking tray or similar under the swivel to catch the grease/oil save it going everywhere :rolleyes:

Yes more on the front there are all the bolts that hold the swivel ball to the axle case and all the bolts that hold the stub to the swivel.

Also before you order your bits whip off your track rods and turn the swivels from end to end. Check the swivel balls are in good condition, I got all the way through my job and found one of my balls ( ooo err ) was trash.

Your shopping list on your thread looks pretty comprehensive, hope I get everything I need especially bolts as i think you're right in saying replace them.

If I spend much more on this landy both my balls will be trashed by the missus :eek: trying to convince her this is all pennies really and well worth doing on a decent truck :rolleyes::D
 
Shop4autoparts for the swivel bearings - cheapest ive found imo.

Use Timken bearings where possible.

Buy a 14mm ratchet spanner itll save you so much time.

Id also suggest replaceing any bolts you remove.

Worth checking the wheel bearing condition at the same time - Id be tempted to order a set incase yours are shot then youve no down time!

Check your brake discs are in good nick too.

Get a proper 52mm socket - Not a box spanner!

I have one, cant remember where i got it it works a charm, just use a wobble bar and a UJsocket adaptor, should be fine etc
Be warned, you might get yer nut spanner stuck so keep pushing the bolt back, but not too far cos you cant get yer socket on it, its a right giggle!!!!
 
Clunk/judder on unsympathetic take up of drive seems to have got worse. I know the halfshafts need doing, theyre in the garage. So got underneath today to investigate further. A frame ball joint seems good, the upper arm bushes have some play but not desperate. The rear prop I'm convinced is seized on the slider so new 1 has been ordered (gkn uj's). The rear shocks are, well shocking. Can be spun round in the bushes and moved up and down by hand by a good 2 inches. The lower bush in one side is completely disintegrated. Signs of leakage. They looked a bit rough when I viewed the car but they were obviously worse than I thought. No problem though not a great expense and they look original to be fair. So new rears ordered.
Front halfshafts have excessive play and 1 swivel is/has been leaking. Prop seems good, new uj's going on.

So plan is do the rear halfshafts, prop and shocks, go on holiday in August then attack the front halfshafts/cv joints rebuild swivels with seal kits and do shocks and front prop uj's o_O

Any advice r.e swivel rebuild kits and method would be great :)

I got a spitfire when i was 18, had no dollar so had to fix it myself and learn the hard way, carrier bag full of rusty spanners and bleeding knuckles, sittingin the road using the kerb as a jack.........oooo good times!
i changed a number plate light and ended up doing a chassis off resto, that was the first sign I had the illness....
 
Ahhh dude that would be damn amazing! I doubt I'll be doing it for a while though! Though ideally before Spain!
see what i can do, chaps alright but a dozy unreliable twunt at the best of times, if i ask him tomorrow he might remember to bring it in within a week or so etc

Take the whole thing out with shaft in once go, retreat to comfy shed or other suitable area rebuild, set tension shims etc in good light on not onthe floor etc! and refit

What can I use as a cleaner other than paraffin?
Hoping to get the rear done this weekend, confidence boost hopefully before I tackle fronts :)
