fair points mate!
i guess its about what you need, and your needs fit the D3.
it is like comparing cats with dogs, shame you cant keep both!

****in hell if I could have both....:D I'd prob have a 530d if I could keep the defender as well lmao

Defender does it all, just not as well as a d3 would do it all I suppose. I need a landy in my life though lol. I don't need the perceived better off road ability and im not sure id be losing an investment really, prices won't be great forever and it's a long way from being a classic (2003)
I'd rather someone else enjoy it and use it as a workhorse tbh

Dogs are better. :p

D3 in good order with fair amount of history + a wedge of cash your way, almost a no brainer in the sense that the D3 is the comfortable family barge that will do everything that you need, you don't seem to be a mud plugger but you do need something for your caravan and a light bit of laning.

I've had D3s already and can vouch for the comfort afforded by a car that was well into the high 30s ££££s when new, decent set of A/Ts on it and you will be able to do everything you can now but actually hold a sensible conversation and not feel cream crackered when you get out at the other end, Defenders are a nice thing to have if a) you can afford them, b) you are not nervous of it being pinched every time you leave it, c) you are not a high miler.

Just my 2p in the pot ;)

Thinking clearly and with no emotion, thats the conclusion I've come to. Im not a mud plugger but i do the courses at the shows and have joined glass, just need to get a bit of guidance on some localish lanes. The defender a bit too nice to mud plug for me lol

I think the d3 and 4k is reasonable. Mine's not without its niggles, i paid 13k for it but if you look at what they actually go for now its 9-10k anyway. His is worth 4.5 to him. The chap is self employed and wants a workhorse for towing a tri axle so it'll be used as it should if he has it.

Copy and paste from advert for his

Discovery 3
2006 (55 plate)
Tdv6 6 speed manual
Full history
7 Seats , heated front and rear
Harmon cardon sound system with new amp
Tow pack
New clutch and cross over pipe, rear air bags, rear prop, front diff. Just had a thorough going through for me to use, but my girl doesn’t get on with it (too big...)
Cam belt service 18 months ago
Very clean body work
Only fault is a very slight (I can’t hear it!) noise from the front nearside wheel baring , £30 for a new complete hub on eBay..
Full V5 , in my name, plenty of paperwork...

Could get him to do wheel bearing for me

The fact that it's had a new clutch already is gold!!! Not an easy job to do at home and BIG£££ in the garage!!!

I had both auto and manual, both were a dream to drive, the auto scared the crap out of me because it could get to 100mph se effortlessly and quickly for a 3T barge :eek::eek: and the manual is great with good range between gears and it just really suited the 2.7 V6 diesel in every way I thought.

It has everything you need and if he did the wheel bearing on it I fully expect to see you start a new members fred on D3 ownership ;)

@dieseldog69 would the wheel bearing be a deal breaker or is it something worth doing myself? Would it be better to do both sides? I Did think that about the clutch, what I should end up with is a well sorted d3 with the usual niggles sorted for the foreseeable. He's a landy man as well, he's had defenders before and got a series at the minute so should be a sensible conversation when we meet

Soz mate, only just saw the notification, certainly not a deal breaker and if it were me I'd get both fronts done at the same time.

Did you taste drive it yet?

Well after a test drive and noticing a suspect split intercooler pipe, tranny breather leak and intermittent tailgate not opening...

I'm now a proud owner of a 2006 d3 tdv6 s manual and 4500 English pounds.

@gstuart buyers guide was very helpful

I'm happy, he's inherited a good defender with it's own issues and I've got my family barge with a wedge of cash which I'm not going to obsess about and worry where I park it.

Pics to follow when I've thrown some water over it :)

New thread incoming. Thanks for all the advice on here lads, see you in discovery forum!

Knew you'd like it and they're small fixes to be fair ;)

Hi

Lovely looking disco and indeed the D3 forum I found invaluable for tech info

Smell could indeed be the FBH , comes in below 7c

If it is ur alternator is best to only fit a Denso , if u leave it it can take ur battery out with it

Plse give us a shout if u need any info

As urs is a pre 2007 u can also blank the egrs without needing the software patch , leave the pipes in situ and fit a blank between the pipes and engine block , clean ur MAP sensor, remove throttle body butterfly valve , reinstall pin, have full details if u want them

Will look out for a new thread in the disco section and think there’s around 10 x of us now that own D3s

Ps , here’s my old bucket , plus retrofitted the D4 steering wheel and stalks

Lol just

remember the d2’s paved the way for the 3,s :p

:):)

Funny enough I wanted a D2 at first but alas all the ones I looked at had chassis issues, did think about fitting a new chassis but felt it was too big of a job to take on

Then saw the D3 being sold as a fixer upper so got that instead as a project , took a year just sorting out all the previous bodges

You've done loads on yours! I've spotted a couple of bodges already on mine...

R.e the hot smell, it's coming from l/h side of the engine bay, mostly from a mini exhaust looking thing that sits just in front of the battery/fuse box. Sound like the fbh mate? Alternator is opposite side of engine I believe?

Can't wait to get around it the weekend, just been looking at tailgate I suspect the upper tailgate actuator is fubar.

Might start a thread tonight but no piccies till she's clean :p
