Do you think that the foam would cope with being moulded round the wheel tubs on a Disco?

Was going to just do the good old builders flashband trick and a heat gun to deaden the drumming on them as I know that it would form round the tub easy enough.

Dunno about the foam mate as I've not had any in front of me yet, but this rubber/butyl/aluminium stuff defo would mould nicely. Just make sure everything's warm and clean.

It's just glorified flashband init but that stuff will stink in warm weather
 
Ahhh fair! I was replacing the carpet in the front anyway as was worn away in areas!

When I do the rear and the roof I'm gonna pull the vinyl liner off the footwells and trans tunnel and do that as well, from the little I've done today and the difference I know it's worth spending the coin now lol

I just had a better look at the pictures on the eGay link and there is a blue track car that has it all over the boot and the spare wheel well in the boot floor shows it moulds really well, cheers for the link, it is in my bookmarks bar for a later date.

It was good yeah, we'll go again. It was the club site just off the A5 signposted Knockin.

No trips planned for Feb :( I'd go this weekend if I wasn't in afternoons, no snow here yet :)
 
Bit of pottering about today, the steering has got a lot more vague in a short space of time so after seeing all the play in every joint I ordered a few standard bits and started with the drop arm ball joint

Now the original top cup is on the left, new one on right. The shoulder on the original is much wider, the new one wouldn't press in to the drop arm, just slid in all the way to the seat. Probably need a new arm tbh but that ain't happening on the drive so I pressed the old one back in. It wasn't in bad shape at all, there was a lot of heat discolouring on the original ball though.

It all went back together nicely, had to nip out for a g clamp to get the circlip in but it's not a bad job to do at all.

Started on the drag link, original joint was looser than Gemma Collins on the ice and really notchy, boot split in a few places

This bad boy came out easy peasy, few knocks with the BFH and a squirt of plusgas and it came off, bear in mind I haven't got a vice.

The new drag link tube didn't come with pinch clamps so I used the originals with the new nylock nuts from the new track rod assembly I bought. Need to get some m6 nylocks now to finish track rod but old ones off and new ones set to length to get me to garage for tracking

So I got bored and started poking around the engine bay. Towing the van back the other week, it started with that whooshing intake noise and down on power again! Can't see any delamination or splits in all the hoses but they are original so prob won't hurt to replace them. I did notice oil pooling from the intercooler to intake pipe and on the top of the engine from the breather pipe....so I took the intercooler off for cleaning, hoping it's just normal oil mist from turbo building up, there's just a film of oil in all the hoses so not too worried yet lol

Looks a bit sorry for itself now :(:D

More tatting about today, cleaned up the earth points battery neg to chassis/gearbox and bulkhead to chassis.

Took starter off for a laugh and cuz I had a kit from my disco. Contacts were quite worn and pitted so worth doing. Didn't struggle too much with the infamous top nut. Which was nice.
Absolutely filthy all round the bellhousing, had to scrape and rinse quite a lot of oily, greasy, earthy shìte off. Can't see anything leaking, must've been years of build up from grime.

Greased the props and adjusted the drivers door catch again but it still needs slamming :mad:

Rear prop, getting grease into the slider, it just came out of the yoke end instead of out of the rubber gaiter. Front one, the grease came out the gaiter so it's gone where it's supposed to. Any reason for that?

Also thinking of putting the 2 front seats in the back with the cubby box for the lads to store their bits, with new seats and cubby for up front. I'll have to rethink where the dog goes though lol she gets belted in on the rear middle seat at the minute.

Lol why not? Its done enough mileage to be confident the crank aint gonna snap, it would've by now surely?? The belts are ok for 5 and a half years or about 100,000miles. The handbrakes been done, crossover pipes been done, control arms done recent.

This defender is killing us as a family comfort wise. Theyre not family cars but im a land rover man, why not a d3? Had d2, been there, done td5s. They're getting old now. I'm just looking at it practically. My hearts in the defender but c'mon, they are **** aren't they? I know that's part of the appeal but it ain't the right vehicle for an everyday family car. It's a tool, workhorse.

Considering manual over auto cuz they're better on fuel apparently and I'm not really a fan of autos. If anything does go wrong, I'm confident enough with suspension and brakes. The engines are good for 250k plus if serviced. They ain't all dogs are they, they sold loads. Id rather have an older one thats had all the problems already and had them fixed properly than a newer one thats yet to **** the bed.

Or am I missing something?

i guess its about what you need, and your needs fit the D3.
it is like comparing cats with dogs, shame you cant keep both!
