Better mpg

Hi, thinking about getting a 300tdi or early TD5, apart from a kenlowe (or similar) fan conversion and driving slower is there any thing else that can be done to improve the MPG? and what should i expect to get on a run doing motorway speeds?

most effective way to improve mpg is to attach a helium baloon to yer right boot.

you'll still struggle to better 30mpg though.

Remember to " factor in " the cost cost of the " Kenlowe " fan when counting a possible very small increase in MPG.

If a TD5 Disco does around 30 mpg, then your looking at about 20p per mile for evey 1 mile gained in economy !

Or, if you do 10 k a year, by improving your mpg from 30 to 31, you would save about £ 78.00.

I have found that using non supermarket fuel makes up to 2mpg difference, and i,ll soon let you know if blanking of and removing the EGR completely makes any further difference !.

If yer wantin good mpg for green reasons put in 50% veg (to the TDI not the TD5) and you'll get 50+ miles per gallon of non renewable diesel fuel burnt.
If yer wantin good MPG for cost reasons you will be paying the equivalent of about 80 pence per litre for your fuel (at 50/50).
Thinner lighter tyres make a noticeable difference to fuel consumption.

Speaking about Discos, Tdi 300 autos, it is possible to get 33mpg day in day, but NOT if you are in a hurry

If you want to cruise the motorways at 75-80mph and still get good fuel consumption, look elsewhere.

If you want a disco because you want /need comfort, 4 wheel drive off-road facillities and a hobby, then walk this way sir.......................

A 10 yr old Disco needs more attention than an average Diesel saloon. If you're prepared for that, then walk this way sir.............................

To make then run at their most fuel efficient, you need to De-EGR it, De-Cat it, service it properly and regularly, ensure that it always has a good clean air filter (really crucial this), considor running on the narrower tyres 205/80 rather than 235/70, don't go over 60mph, change gear at or before 2500rpm.

Still want one? Ok then sir, walk this way.............................

Ps They are great vehicles so long as you understand and accept that they are NOT normal saloon cars.

Thanks for the advice, what about if i went do the v8 lpg route? any better for long distances or are they unreliable, do they do about 17mpg on lpg?

Have a serious look at using Reddex diesal (and petrol) addative. I was getting 430 miles out of a tank on my '94 300TDi and after using Reddex in last four tanks am getting much closer to 600 miles per tankfull!

....and don't do more than 60, don't exceed 2500rpm, don't accelerate like a racer and don't use supermarket fuel!

The Disco really is a nightmare on fuel. My wife has got a 3.9 V8 which returns 14 mpg and we're thinking of getting rid of it, as it's not good for the school run of 3 miles each way. However, I've done the numbers, and if I were to get here a nice new Mazda/Nissan or Merc A series on a lease, the difference would be very small over the next 3 years. It works out that a lease on a new diesel car would be about £170 per month and, as the Disco is bought and paid for, it's not worth it even when £500 of varios repair costs are built in. Unless I going wrong somewhere??

My V8 3.9 Disco1 does about 13mpg on LPG at 46p a litre. It does about the same on unleaded but I try not use it!
