that true Dave and the real problem comes when the tank gets very hot and
the fuel starts to boil - there will/should be a venting process to prevent
a breach if its not cooled the next stage is a Bleve (pronounced Blevvy)
boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion at which point you really want to
be several miles away preferably in somewhere very solid say a nuclear
bunker? theres a movie of a small road tanker having a bleve at
http://www.dcfp.navy.mil/mc/video/truckfire.htm nothing like the scale of
Hemels fire

Effectively a "controlled" burn off.

I can imagine that being near by would not be very healthy. I can't
imagine this being the case for the initial explosion this morning
though, the ones 20 mins later maybe. Caught a bit earlier this
evening (Ch4 News?) where the MP and ex fire fighter was talking about
the incident. He mentioned in passing that the depot wasn't working
fully and was in some form of maintenance...

I'm in Luton and I slept through it. As usual. I've been known to
sleep through earthquakes before. (Birmingham area, a couple of years
ago)

I was trying to check the location on Google Earth. It's in a low-
resolution area, and it isn't very clear where the tanks are, not
compared to the Killingholme tank farms, which look to be much bigger.
But it's still frighteningly close to Hemel Hempstead.

i see it holds 5% of the uks fuel when full so how big an explosion would
the Fawley depot make if that went up

No, just a gag by Lee about my earlier question on the group about
getting fuel out of a tank without blowing up a town. Not guilty!
I was playing poker at the time.

It appears to be the tag C at
http://maps.google.com/local?hl=en&q=total&near=hemel+hempstead&btnG=Search
not clear at all but too close to the M1 hence the closures the map is
slightly better if you access www.streetmap.co.uk and input 508500,208500
as the os grid ref

I only play "poker in the rear" when I'm away from home, best not to
get a reputation in your own neighbourhood.

I have NEVER heard so much twaddle.
It does not (did not) supply petrol or diesel.
It is (was) mainly heavy fuel oils and other distillates.
These things happen, thankfully not often.
Last incident on something NEAR this
scale was Flixborough in the 70s
Instead of complaining about the "possible"
rise in price of fuel be thankful it was a Sun
morning and nobody was killed.
I will bet your fuel cost dont go up, however your insurance will!
They got to get it back from somewhere.
The easiest target is YOU !!!!
Happy Xmas

Oh? So I suppose all the talk about getting supplies to the garages served
by about 3 major suppliers in addition to total/texaco from other depots was
a load of twaddle, too?

>It is (was) mainly heavy fuel oils and other distillates.

The info I've heard implies that it was all kind of oils including petrol
and diesel.

That went without saying, for me at least.
