Just wondering a) if it's possible and b) whats the best way in a manual/auto to stop/stall an over revving engine feeding on its own oil?

Would you be able to stall the engine by ramming it into 5th and stamping on the brakes?

On an auto could you try and block the exhaust pipe with your foot or unhook the air intake (if you had time) and block it with your hand/shirt/jumper?

Is there a better way to stop the engine or is it not possible? Out on interest, what speed would the engine run to before self destructing and how long would it take?

rag in intake or 4th and dump clutch, only ever experienced an early tdi head gasket failed and ran on oil till it blew.

happened to me in the wifes previous citroen picasso when the turbo bearings went fubar , pulled up quick on side of the m5 motorway and squeezed the air intake pipe until it stalled , but still cost £2k repair ( which citroen paid £1500 of as goodwill gesture after much complaining and arguing as it was only 3 days over its 3 year 60k mile warranty with only 41k on clock )

Don't put your hand over the air intake ... did this on my 300 Tdi after fitting a snorkel to 'check it' ... nearly took me fookin' hand off, and that was only at tickover, very strong airflow!! As said earlier, squeeze the intake pipes together, or use something a lot more solid than a hand ... a shirt or similar might just get pulled through ...

Do not use hands bigger diesels will take your skin off. Use 4th gear as its most direct and uses no lay shaft as the strain will be serious and is more likley to break somthing internal in the gearbox if you use any other gear.

Petrol kill ignition system pull off live on coil, or centre HT lead if you are brave.

I did this lots of times on my old 2.5TD 19J. 2nd gear, foot on brake and drop the clutch quickly. Or if you are rolling along leave it in gear and just jam on the brakes until you stall.

had this happen on an old ford cargo 4 cylinder lorry i had. i pulled off the rubber air intake hose and put my hand over the end of it, never again will i do that ! it almost broke my fingers bending them the opposite way they should go !!! i couldnt even get my hand off untill the engine had died down and stalled. i have squeazed the intake hose flat on a merc engine and this did the trick fine and no broken fingers :)
