best soundproofing/ insulation ideas? techniques?

Yep, Sean, I hear what you are saying about moisture, but I plan on sealing everything with silicon before I line it and as I have an Eberspacher dampness shouldn't be a problem, it never has been in my the previous vehicles I did it to, an Astra van, an old transit and last one was a Peutgeot Partner van. When I'm sleeping in it, I always have the windows open a little for ventilation and the fabric lining helps to stop condensation. The floor will get vinyl too for easier cleaning 'coz in the carpetted Astra dried grass was a bugger to shift wi a wee sweeping brush.

You shouldnt be sleeping on dried grass, it'll make you itch. Use a sleeping bag

I did the whole lot.

A roll of the 300mm flashband was enough to cover:

The rear wheel arches
Gearbox Tunnel
Footwells

Well worth it in my opinion...very pleased with it.

Cool cool, iv only a 150mm roll sititng here but Im guessing it should work.

I am using a combination of aluminum back camping mats(very cheap at the moment) and aluminum backed roof flashing which is basically bichamin sheets on a roll. Got the roof flashing (which is adhesive on one side so no need to buy spray glue) from Wickes, 15 metre roll about 50cm wide was £20. I used to use this in a previous job installing competition car audio systems and it worked very well and at a fraction of the price of branded sound deadening that appear to be made of the same materials.

I had ordered a kit from Wright Off Road in October to sound proof the front and hopefully make a professional finish but as i am still waiting for it i guess i may be using some of these ideas instead. Every week i ring and every week i get told it is just being manufactured and should be with me by the end of next week. I have definitely come to the conclusion that with this company the end of next week never comes. I mistakenly thought that with a recession on a company might be grateful for an order amounting to several hundred pounds.

My advice is don't spend a lot.....I did and it made very little difference really - certainly not worth what I spent. The design of the defender is such that you're always in close contact with the engine, transmission and road plus the panels are not designed with noise reduction in mind so they're always noisy even with the kits.

A bit of cheap stuff will take a bit of the edge off the noise when trundling around but at speed they're always noisy.

hello just thought id add what ive dont which is the flash band and carpet tiles on the roof which has stopped the drumming noise and warmed it big time .

lol well it prob would be in good taste if i used it in moderation....but i didnt.
you aint seen it all haha eg: seat covers,curtains,dash.....but its better than the roof thats in tiger print lol looks like peter stingfellow's bedroom...
but yes ( balkmafia )i think and my mates think it looks good, no accounting for taste.

Having read the other posts hear i decided to try the camping mat route for the inside roof lining of my 90. As they were on sale in my local sainsbury's at £3 each i bought 5 and this has been plenty. I will be covering them with acoustic carpet so being bright blue doesn't matter too much. Have also used Aluminium backed roof flashing (Wickes) for covering the wheel tubs, and the cab flooring including behind and under the seats, with cut out sections for the battery etc.

Although the camo'd interior is not to my taste, I believe everyone has the right to his or her own choices. He did say he got it as a cheap job lot, which I understand. I just bought a roll end of material from Dunelm Mill to use for making curtains, but I mis-judged my measurements and now have enough to make covers for the entire interior once I start doing my camper type conversion in the back.) But a PINK one?

No thank you. That would be almost as bad as one of my nephews who completely lined the interior (everything from the front to the back, dash, doors etc., all except the floor) of his Transit van with yon black and white hairy imitation cow hide stuff. It took a little getting used to, but it was a lot quieter and warmer!

Dont worry, I'm not taking it too personal...

But be very careful with anything sticky in your landy. Just ripped off the soundproofing off the tunnel, and it looked awful. Lots of it is rusted away. It did trap a lot of moisture in it, and my series is usually parked where it's warm and cozy, so dont expect your night heater to keep her warm enough.

If you decide to use sticky stuff: I do have some phosphoric acid left. You might need a gallon after you've scrubbed off the stuff next time...
