Hi Wisemen of the Landrover world, My 17 yr old godson has an 1988 Defender Pick Up with a totally renovated body but the 2.5TD engine is blowing oil and needs to be replaced.
Can't get a definitive answer on which engine is best-have been told 200tdi fits like for like but 300tdi is better and TD5 needs new gearbox and wiring-what is your opinion? Am also told it will cost about £1500
Help!:(

200TDi is the best engine Land Rover ever made.
They're quite cheap ex rusty Discos (£200 - £300) but need a bit of modification to the plumbing to get them to fit.
A 200TDi ex Defender is an easy fit but they're therefore much more expensive.
My local Indie will supply and fit an ex Disco one for £1000.

Try a search - there's loads of threads on the subject.

i did a 300tdi from a disco into mine, they aint that mch hard work and they are brilliant.

If you are near me i am willing to help you out an all - overall i rekon i spent £200 on my entire project, cos i bought a complete disco, used the axles for better brakes etc, sold the disco body for scrap etc.

Where abouts you based?
