Depends what you want to do with the car. td5 is great till you go for a little swim. thats when you wish you had a 200tdi :D

The TD5 is a perfectly good engine, it is quite refined, however, it is gutless at low rev's unless you get it chipped. It has issues with deep water, because the elctrics are not properly sealed, heck it has issues with it's own engone oil! If anything goes wrong you have to start troubleshooting electrics which is a pain in the neck. It doesn't make sense either, a diesel is supposed to be able to run in very wet environments, the V8 boys have these problems, the TD5 brings all these electrical issues to a diesel, it seems absurd. In 10 years from now, I bet it's the 200 and 300's that are still in the majority of running land rovers.

If your idea is to put it into a stealers for repairs, or buy the diagnositcs kit then keep a stock of sensors so that when something like a £3 piece of plastic with a wire on it fails you can make it run again then sure get the TD5. There are millions of motorists now in vehicles that cannot be easily home maintained but that is not what the Land Rover is about.

Each to his own. I would much prefer to have both my 300tdi's, a stock of parts for them and know that I can work on no bother. I prefer to troubleshoot using proper diesel engine mechanical knowledge. I also like knowing that at the end of the day, I can take the stop solenoid out of it, shove it down a hill and it will run without a single piece of electrical equipment what so ever.
