So then, oh wise and experienced ones (or noisy and opinionated ones)...

Which is the best engine to grace a Landrover?

I'm thinking performance/ efficiency/ longevity

Petrol/Diesel?

Agreed but I would favour the 200tdi as it's even less complicated, personally I will stay with my Jappo engine cos it was vitually a freebie, they are always the best !

250k upwards mileage out of either of them (mot'd a 200tdi Disco today with 325k on the clock, still the original lump without ever having had the head removed) as long as oils etc changed at proper intervals. Early 300tdi is the 200tdi refined without any electronic gizmo's.

i had a 1990 200tdi disco it was oil + filter change every 3000 miles, head gasket went at 55000 miles and went again at 104000 miles, not good i say, i think 300tdi is far better.

It is unfair to condemn a particular type of engine based on experience of a single unit, the 200Tdi is just about the most reliable engine LR ever built with the 300 a close second. The reason I say this is based on years of looking after and repairing them. The P gasket leaking killed too many 300's as did the timing belt running out of line.
Now the problems of both engines,(and complete cures) are well known there is no reason not to have either. All we need now is a decent alternative to Diesel to run them on.
Both engines are very rebuildable, reliable, fuel efficient and give good power,I currently run 2 of them and i'm in no hurry to change.

I want a 200TDi but I can't seem to get one, the Ebay ones go for silly money, a local breaker does them for £400 but only does 300TDi's now......Anybody got a spare 200TDi with all the bits for a fair price please drop me a line!

There's next to no difference between them and either of them is a lot better for the DIYer than a TD5.

If you can get a 300 for four hundred nicker, I'd shake his hand off - speshly if it's with box.

Cheers,

200tdi every time followed closely by 300tdi .
i've got a 200tdi in me 90 and a 200tdi disco , tha disco has 212 thou on the clock and i'm just about to take the head off cos it's getting a bit smokey now , but it's still on the button and pull's well .
