Speaking from personal experience, the side airbags in the P38 are a total waste of time. I reckon the seat belt pretensioners make a greater contribution to survival in a head on than the airbag, always assuming the seat belt is in good condition and is worn flat and not twisted to buggery. There have been many injuries cause by incorrectly worn belts, if they are twisted, the surface area in contact with the body is reduced increasing spot loadings and causing rib cage damage.

I have known of people killed because they were wearing a seatbelt. Also people who survived a smash because they were not wearing a belt. One notable incident was when two guys in a Ford Zodiac ran under the back of an artic and the roof was peeled back from just above the bonnet line. They were able to duck onto the front bench seat and came out of it virtually unhurt. They could never have done that wearing belts. It works all ways, but generally think it is best to wear one.
