Best battery for 2002 TD6

Hi all,

My alternator gave up on me a week ago and I had a new one fitted, I think the battery is goosed too now as I'm starting to get signs that it is weakening again after a full charge last week with a CTEK deep charger and I've been driving the car with the new alternator all week yet it is getting slower to start the car, the pixels on the dash are barely readable now (they were 100x better after the full charge last week) and the parking sensors have stopped functioning again.

I'll take it for a free battery test at halfords, but pretty sure it will need a new battery.

I see getting 1000CCA is advised, and I've done some searches on here for the best battery to get, I'm just looking for an up to date recommendation of what to buy please (and where from)?

Can't seem to find a Bosch S5 with 120ah. Where did you get yours from?

They'll tell you it's duff to sell you a new battery. I bought mine (1000CCA 135AH) from battery megastore on line, not sure what size will fit the L322, just get the biggest you can.

Ok I've been searching around and this is the best I can find on the net so far...

I see lots of good reviews from Disco owners but not from L322 so not sure it will even fit yet. Will have to measure up when I get home

It only lists this against the P38 not the L322, however when I checked all of the dimensions against the battery listed for the L322 they are the same size! So I hope this will actually fit and it is 1000cca and 130AH for £99

That's' like the lump I fitted to the P38, it's been very good so far, (2 years)

Still going to let the halfords numptys do a quick test for me just on the off chance the battery is fine and it's my new alternator playing up

Is your alternator charging right, you have worried me. Spending money on a battery maybe a mistake. your alternator should charge the battery at around 13.5v, but sometimes the volts aren't enough and you need a ampere check using a meter that uses inductance to measure the charge rate. If your engine starts ok after glow plugs or spinning over a short time then the battery is holding it's charge. Through experience city or town vehicles tend to use up batteries within 2-3 years for a standard type heavy duty Longer.

13.5volts will not charge a modern lead calcium low/no maintenance battery, it should be about 14.5v on the L322 at 2Krpm and 14.2v on the P38.

Ok just got back from my free battery test at halfords... Very helpful chap actually and I take back the numpty comment.

Their battery tester shows the battery is fine! My new alternator fitted last week charges at 14v with no load but as soon as I load it the reading drops to 12.4v...

The battery test tool threw that up as the issue. So I'll give the company who supplied and fitted it a call tomorrow. Land Ranger services in Stockport, I hear they are reputable so fingers crossed they sort it out for me

Duff alternator or a bad connection then.
